Biography

Sophia Myers was born in November 1848 in Hartford Twnp., Licking Co., Ohio. She is the daughter of Emanuel Myers and Lydia Layton.

She married John W Barber 27 March 1884 in Licking Co., Ohio.[5]

In August 1885, she brought suit against her father for recover past wages.[6]

In May 1888, George B Van Fossen, admin de bonis for her father's estate, sold 3 parcels of land to her and her husband.[7]

In May/June 1914 after her husband died, his son by his first marriage, brought suit against her to sell the farm. [10]

The sheriff's sale resulted in the sale of land for less than appraisal.[11]

She sued a neighbor for damages in January 1922:[13]

She died 17 April 1922 in Newark, Ohio. [14] She is buried in Hartford Cemetery in Croton, Ohio.[15]

    Know All Men By These Presents That whereas by virtue of an order of sale made by the Probate Court within and for the County of Licking and State of Ohio, George B Van Fossen as Administrator de bonis non with the will annexed, of the estate of Emmanual Myers deceased on the 30th day of May 1888 sold at private sale to Sophia G Barber and John W Barber for the sum of three thousand and eighty dollars ($3080) for the paymemt of lawful claims the estate of the said Emanuel Myers deceased to wit: First Parcel - situate in the County of Licking in the State of Ohio and bounded and described as follows being the north end of the west part of lot fifteen (15), section four (4), township four (4) range fifteen (15), United States Military Land. Beginning at the north west corner of lot 15; thence east sixty-two (62) rods to a stone; thence south sixty-four and one half (64 1/2) rods to a stone; thence west sixty-two (62) rods to a stone; thence north sixty-four and one half (64 1/2) rods to the place of the beginning, suppose to contain twenty-five acres more or less. Second Parcel - Situate in the County of Licking and the State of Ohio Hartford Township and bounded and described as follows to wit: Section four (4) township four and range fifteen (15) United States Military Land and being fifty acres to be taken off the south side of lot sixteen (16) said lot contains two hundred and fourteen and 65/100 acres referenced to the plat of said section made by James Holmes, surveyor of said county, being had duly recorded. Third Parcel - Situate in the County of Licking, State of Ohio, and in the township of Bennington, and bounded and described as being a tract of land purchased by Ephraim Baker by Daniel Edgehill by deed recorded in Vol. 52 of Deeds, pages 148 and 149 in the proper office. Situate in section three (3), township four (4), and range fourteen (14), lot number thirteen (13), and bounded namely: Commencing at a point where the road from Johnstown to Ross's Mill crosses the line between Bennington and Hartford townships on said lot; thence with the center of said road forty-six rods south; thence west to the said township line fifteen (15) rods; thence north on said township line to the place of the beginning supposed to contain about two acres, more or less.
    Which sale was afterward on said 30th of May 1888 AD approved and confirmed by said Court and said George B Van Fossen as such admin was ordered to execute and deliver to the said Sophia G Barber and John W Barber a deed for said premises according to the Statute in such case made and provided. All of which will more fully appear by the records of said Court to which reference there is here made. Therefore I the said George B Van Fossen as Administator de bonis with the will annexed of the estate of Emanual Myers deceased in consideration of the premises and by virtue of the powers in me vested in law and the order of the said Court do hereby give grant bargain sell and convey unto the said Sophia G Barber and John W Barber and unto their heirs and asigns forever. In Testimony whereof I as Administrator as aforesaid here to set my handand seal this 30th day of May AD 1888.

    By virtue of Order of Sale to me directed from the Court of Commons Pleas of Licking County, Ohio, I will offer for sale at public auction at the south door of the Court House (in the rotunda) in the city of Newark, in said County of Licking and State of Ohio, on
    Saturday, June 27th, 1914,
    at 10:30 o'clock a.m. of said day, the following described real estate, to wit:
    First Parcel - situate in the County of Licking , in the State of Ohio, and township of Hartford, and being the north end of the west part of lot 15, section 4, township 4 and range 15, USM lands.     Seventy-nine acres of Hartford and Bennington township farmland brought $850 less than appraised valuation in a sale conducted by Sheriff Slabaugh from the south steps of the court house Saturday forenoon. The property was involved in the suit Lewis E vs Sophia G Barber, was appraised at $3850 and brought $3000 from Sophia Barber.

    Sophia G Barber files suit against John Baker in common pleas court yesterday to recover $227. The petition alleges that Baker allowed the car to be turned into a field with steers and that the cow was killed when she fell off of a haystack after being chased there. The cow was valued at $160.  :Judgment for $67 is also asked for the rent of farm equipment. BG Smythe is the attorney.
