Biography

Samantha Ellen Myers was born on 3 August 1853 in Fairfield County, Ohio [1] to Heinrich Frederick Myers and Saloma Klahr. Samantha was the youngest child of seventeen children. Shortly after Samantha’s birth her parents moved their family from Fairfield County Ohio to Washington Township, Tazewell County, Illinois [2]. In October 1860 at the age of seven years, Samantha’s father died in Tazewell County, Illinois.

On 29 December 1869 in Washington, Tazewell County, Illinois at the age of sixteen years, Samantha married Benjamin Franklin Macklin [3] [4]. From this union they had five children, four children survived including three sons and one daughter [5] [6]. One son died in infancy [7]. In 1870, Samantha’s mother died. The family continued to live in Illinois for a few years and moved to Reno County, Kansas in 1877 on a farm in Valley Township, Reno, Kansas [8]. Later in 1900, Benjamin and Samantha moved their family to Hutchinson, Kansas at 400 Third Avenue East where they continued to live until Samantha’s death [9].

Samantha died on 9 September 1914 at the age of 61 years in the family home in Hutchinson, Kansas after a long illness [10]. She was survived by her husband and 4 children. She was buried on 11 September 1914 in Hutchinson Eastside Cemetary [11].
