When the Civil War broke out, John served in Captain William F. He enlisted on October 10, 1861 and was mustered into Pennsylvania service on December 2, 1861. The company as a whole was transferred into Company B, 3rd Maryland Potomac Home Brigade in early 1862. He was mustered out as a private at Buckhannon, WV on February 8, 1865. [6][7][8][9][10]
In the 1870 census,[11] the family are still living in Thompson Township, although John is now listed as a labourer: John Breakall (38); Lucinda Breakall (35); Louis Breakall (12); Martin Breakall (10); William E Breakall (6); Charles G Breakall (2).
In the 1880 census,[12] the family are still in Thompson Township, but their eldest two sons have moved out and their only daughter has been born: John Breakall (46); Lucinda Breakall (42); William Elsworth Breakall (17); Charles Grant Breakall (11); Marietta Breakall (2).
John died at age 63 on 23 Dec 1896, near Plum Run, Fulton, PA. His burial was on 25 Dec 1896, Christmas Day, at the Antioch Cemetery in Big Cove Tannery, Fulton, Pennsylvania. At his death, his records showed he worked as a farmer and plasterer.[13][14]
John died from Bright's disease and Lucinda filed a widow's pension based on his Civil War military service.[15]
In the 1900 census,[16] Lucinda is living at ED 74 Thompson Township with her two youngest children: Lucinda Breakall (68); Grant C Breakall (31); Ettie M Breakall (22).
By the 1910 census, [17] Marietta had gotten married so Lucinda (apparently reversed in age to 61) is now living alone with son Grant Breakall (46).
