Biography

On 15 October 1911, Terrell Wesley Myers was born in Buncombe County, North Carolina, a son of Sampson L. Myers and Eugenia “Gennie” Shepherd Myers.[1] Eugenia had married Sampson Myers, a widower with two children, on 17 April 1908. [2]

By 15-16 January 1920, when the federal census was listed for the Ivy township of Buncombe County, Eugenia and son Terrell were residing with her mother, sister, and brother. Her brother Fred Jack Shepherd, age 35, was listed as the head of the household. Their mother Matilda was 75 and widowed. Gennie’s sister Lula was 38. Gennie was 40, and her son Terrell was 8. [3]

The federal census of 1930, listed for the Ivy township #2 of Buncombe County on 11 April, found Gennie Myers and Terrell Myers renting a farm on Sugar Creek Road (between Morgan Hill and Barnardsville). Gennie was age 53, and Terrell was 19. Gennie was listed with the occupation of manager and Terrell was a laborer. [4]

After serving in the U. S. Army during the mid- to late 1930’s[5], Terrell developed mental illness which resulted in extended hospitalization in the Broughton Psychiatric Hospital in Morganton, North Carolina.

His mother Eugenia Shepherd Myers died of heart failure on 19 December 1957 at her home on Stockton Branch Road, Weaverville, North Carolina. [6]

Toward the end of his life, when more effective drugs for the treatment of mental illness became available, some cousins (especially descendants of his Uncle Elbert Shepherd) helped him to leave the Broughton Psychiatric Hospital and move to a nursing home in the Asheville area, where he lived for several years.[7]

Terrell died 15 November 1987 in Asheville, North Carolina. His remains were buried beside those of his mother, Eugenia Shepherd Myers, in the cemetery of Piney Mountain Baptist Church, Weaverville, NC. [8] [9]

Note: While some documents name him “Myers” in accord with his father’s surname, he was also called Terrell Shepherd (as his mother used the Shepherd name in later life) and his grave marker bears the name “Terrell W. Shepherd” (see image).
