Biography

Simon Johnson Meijer was christened on 26 Nov 1749 at the Reformed Dutch Church, New York, NY to parents Andrew Miejer and Susanna McPhedrixs.[1]

In 1771, Simon Myer (Simeon Johnson Meyer or possibly "Seymour Johnson Meyers") rented business space in the Southside Albany establishment of Benjamin Hilton. Meyers advertized fabrics, spoons, Maieira, Tea, vinegar, and spices for sale in the short-lived Albany Gazette.

In 1766, an individual listed simply (no first name or additional information) as "Myers" owned a house in Albany's first ward and was taxed at the minimum rate of one pound. Beyond that, he has not been referenced in our ongoing sweep of the community-based record.

Perhaps this Albany resident had been born in New York City in December 1749 and had married Cornelia Thorn of Dutchess County in August 1774. By that time

In 1770, Simon was identified as one of the three sons of Andrew Myer, Jr. and his wife, Susanna, in the will of another family member.

In 1775, he may have been living in Northeast precinct, Dutchess County. He may have served in the Revolutionary army from Dutchess County.

Simon Johnson Myer was appointed 1st Lieut. on Sep 29, 1780 in the Company commanded by Captain John Collins, In Colonel Zephaniah Platt's Regiment of Associated Exempts, Dutchess County, New York.[2][3] He is listed in the DAR patriot Index.[4]

This individual had only a brief residence in pre-war Albany. We seek information on his origins and path to Albany, later life, and passing. In other words, who was "Seymour Johnson Meyers" who was doing business in Albany in 1771? [5]

Cornelia Thorn was married to Simon Johnson Myer (son of Andrew Myer and Susannah McPhedris) on 28 Aug 1774; they had twelve children.[3] Simon Johnson Myer was christened on 26 Nov 1749 in Dutch Church, NYC. He was born on 1 Dec 1749 in New York City. He died on 5 Jul 1821 in Red Hook, NY. [7]

Simon J. Myer was buried in the Old Red Church Cemetery at Tivoli (aka Madalin), Dutchess County, New York.[8] The original headstone inscription read: "In Memory of Simon J. Myer who died July 5th, 1821, aged 72 years, 6 months & 5 days." -- Viewed by J. Myer and rubbing done circa 1975. Headstone was soft white marble, badly weathered, and cracked at the ground level; it was subsequently replaced by Myer descendants for the bicentennial.

Simon Johnson Myer was a descendant in the fifth generation from the pioneer, Jan Dirckszen Meyer, and his wife Tryntje Gravenraet who arrived in New Amsterdam May 20, 1651.[3]
