The late Abraham Myers ("Uncle Abe") was a native of - Yass, N.S.W., where he was born on December 24th, 1846. His mother was Australian born also, her place of birth being Liverpool, S.A. After a sojourn in Sydney, where he was a scholar at the celebrated Fort-street National School, he returned to the Yass district and engaged in business there at Cooma, in the Monaro country. He was a heavyweight boxer and was regarded as the heavyweight amateur champion of the Murrumbidgee in the 'seventies. With the gun, both in the field and at the traps, he has defeated recognised Australian champions in the late Fred Gannon, of Sydney, and F. W. Woodbine and Marcus Jenkins, of Narrandera, Riverina, N.S.W. In the 'eighties and early 'nineties he was an extremely fine exponent of the art of billiards and a game was played at Narrandera, about 1893 between him and the then champion amateur, L. A. Gosberry of Wagga Wagga, "Uncle" won the game and the title. It was characteristic of the deceased that he did not recognise defeat, wherein, no doubt, lay the secret of his many victories in the sporting and business world. Mr. Myers was made a Justice of the Peace for the State of New South Wales by the late Sir Henry Parkes in the 'eighties, and was accorded a similar honor by the late Hon. George. Leak when Premier of WA for the Perth magisterial district, and he adjudicated on the first case heard under the W-A Criminal Code about 20 years ago. In 1897 he and his two nephews established a condiment and cordial factory in Perth, which six years later afforded employment for over 50 persons. The business was sold in 1904. He was a fine Australian, and was inordinately proud of his country and compatriots.[4]
