Anne Myhill was born in York County, Colony of Virginia, in about 1669. In a court held in York County on 20 December 1669, "[o]n petition of John Myhill on behalf of himself and wife, a reference is granted to next court, she being big with child and he being sick."[1]
Parents: John Myhill married Mary Lockey, born 1650,[2] daughter of Edward (nephew of Edward, who died childless and named Edward's daughters in his 1667 will). Mary's sisters were Judith (m Henry Cary) and Anne. John and Mary (Lockey) Myhill married "before 1668" (court proceedings related to her uncle's will named John Myhill her husband as well as naming Henry Cary as Judith's husband).[3]
Death: between 1 June and 19 July 1727, Elizabeth City County, Virginia[6]7 Jan and 21 Jan 1727 were given as death dates in merged profiles; datafield has 7 Jun 1727 (changing Jan to Jun from one of those profiles)
Will
An abstract of Anne Ellyson's 1727 will lists a "brother Lockey Myhill" and sons named John and Thomas Ellyson, implying a maiden name of Myhill. The abstract also lists Gerrard Ellyson but does not identify him,[8] but he is likely also a son:
Will of Anne Ellyson, dated June 1, 1727 and proved July 19, 1727, Elizabeth City County:
son John Ellyson ("all goods, &c., in Nansemond Co.")[8]
Neither date is likely, as her mother was born 1650. Birth is more likely about 1670 (based on birth year on attached profile for Thomas, 1685 - birth years on other profiles attached as sons are not possible with her mother born 1650).
Search of St Peter's Parish Register[9] shows no Ellysons. Elizabeth (Ellyson) Johnson, b 1701 in St Peter's Parish, is probably not her daughter. Noland-165 00:18, 27 September 2017 (EDT)
A Joseph Ellison (with wife Mary) is found[9] - perhaps this Joseph.
Merged profile Myhill-45 was for Elizabeth Ann Myhill, b 1647 married 1675 to Gerrard Robert Ellison (was attached to Elliston-310), and died "St Peter, Parish" 1727.
Three of her siblings seem to be born very late in life. Are these correct?
Location Notes
Ellyson is mentioned as being in St Peter's Parish, New Kent County, and a Joseph Ellison is found in the Parish Register, but the Myhills are not.[9]
Text on Elliston-310 puts the Myhill family "of Elizabeth City" but shows Anne born in New Kent County and the Ellistons members of New Kent Meeting House (and Henrico Monthly Meeting). It seems that more research into the Ellysons/Ellistons in the Quaker records is warranted. Merged profile Myhill-20 had "alt" birth info "1704, New Kent, Virginia" in text and "Died 1727 in Rowan, North Carolina" in the datafields (with only source on page a link to a [user-submitted tree requiring an Ancestry subscription to access).
The Myhills have been placed in Elizabeth City County, York County, Charles River County, and Charles City County, and in Charles Parish and York Parish. It appears that standard genealogical practice to drop parish and county labels have not been good for this family. The following partial list, without dates, is from Parishes of Virginia & History of County Formations in Virginia 1617-1995. See those sites for more information.
Charles City County, Charles River County, and Elizabeth City County were three of the original Virginia "shires" established in 1634.
Charles River County was renamed York County in 1643
Nansemond County (1645) evolved from part of Elizabeth City County.
New Kent County was formed from York County in 1654.
Counties were served by parishes, which had thier own boundaries, and both parish boundaries and county boundaries shifted. For example, over the years, York County was served by
Blisland Parish (which also served James City County and New Kent County)
Bruton Parish (which also served James City County)
Charles Parish
Charles River Parish
Chiskiack Parish
Hampton Parish
Marston Parish
Middle Plantation Parish (which also served James City County)
Middletowne Parish (which also served James City County)
New Poquoson Parish
York Parish
Yorkhampton Parish (which also served James City County)
St Peter's parish served James City County and New Kent County.
Elizabeth City Parish - "One of the original Parishes. Renamed 1619, from Kecoughtan Parish, which was formed abt 1610" - served Elizabeth City County.
Elizabeth River Parish served Upper Norfolk County (formed from Elizabeth City County and later renamed Nansemond County).
Following from Dennis Stewart(16676):
Her father John Myhill seems to first appear in York County, Colony of Virginia, by 1667. Her 1727 will specifies her brother as Lockey Myhill. He was the evident son of John Myhill and wife Mary Lockey. Anne wed Gerard Robert Ellyson by 1684. They were members of St. Peter's Anglican(now Episcopal)Church in New Kent Co. VA. But how did Anne Myhill meet Gerard Robert Ellyson? I might offer this, Anne's uncle was Edward Myhill who left a will in 1718 and naming one of the witnesses as Gerard Robert. After the death of her husband in the 1720's Anne Ellyson moved to Elizabeth City Co. VA. where she made her will in 1727. Her brother Lockey Myhill was with her. Elizabeth City Co. no longer exits. Its area today is the city of Hampton, VA. Anne Ellyson's will names her three sons and mentions that she owned land in Nansemond Co. VA. To son John Ellyson she left her goods in Nansemond Co. She left her "Maiden Bible" to her son Gerrard Ellyson. To her son Thomas Ellyson she gave her bed. To her brother Lockey Myhill she left her ring, and to her sister Myhill all of her clothes. -- Dennis Stewart 16 Mar 2022

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Anne by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Anne:
Here is my source for the following: "York County, Virginia Records 1665--1672", by Weisiger. Profile says Anne was born c1660. That's virtually impossible if the mother was born 1650. Anne's mother was still going by her maiden name of Mary Lockey in the 1667 will of her grand uncle Edw. Lockey, Sr. of York Co. VA. Mary married John Myhill that same year. Therefore, a better est. for Anne's birth would be c1668. Her parents were not wed in 1660. Also, Anne did not die on June 7, 1727. That is the date she -wrote- the will. The profile should say she died -after- that date. Profile says Anne was born in Eliz. City Co. VA. There is no evidence for that. Her father John Myhill was in York Co. VA. in 1667 just before her birth. Therefore, York Co. is more likely her place of birth. These people are my ancestors. I've been studying them for years and would like to make some minor edits to this profile and add some more citations.
I agree with all of these suggested changes. Please go ahead and make the edits, and add a full citation to Weisiger to the profile. Is there an online version of that book? If so, please include a link. Thanks again for all your efforts on this family.
Hi profile managers, now including US Southern Colonies Project!
I unlocked the profile (removed PPP). It had been made PPP in 2015 & I don't think it needs to be anymore. Let me know if you think it does (and why).
The profile came to my attention because it was locked but without a project as manager (which is required for PPP). Considering the lengthy research notes and the "Cleanup" section, I did think it probably needed to be a project-managed profile, so I added US Southern Colonies as a manager.
Genealogies of Virginia Families: From Tyler's Quarterly..., Volume 1, Tylers Quarterly Historical and Genealogical Magazine (page 687) shows Anne's children by Ellyson as John & Gerard, then "probably" Robert, Elizabeth, and Thomas.
Robert born 1690 info was from a comment from June 2016 on Ellyson-39 (b 1671, wife attached, as of 13 July 2018, Sarah Crew, born 1694):
"The spouse should be Sarah Spence. There are three generations of Gerard Robert Ellyson in this family. Sarah Crew married the son Gerard Robert born 1690 who isn't attached here as a son. The three generations are all jumbled up with wrong spouse and children attachments."
Profile for one of the Gerard Roberts says he was born 1690, which is ok with Ann b 1670. But the profiles for sons John, Thomas, and Gerard Robert (links in text) have them born in 1675, 1685, and 1671, so something's gone wrong again. Among the profiles attached as children are ones for Robert Gerrard born 1700 (Elliston-307), but text names his mother as Elizabeth & 13 years senior to Robert (b 1659).
Profiles attached for siblings/husband/children still need research/verification & correction. Upon saving, I received the following automated message:
Warning: Check the data.
A child's birth date should not be before a parent is six years old.
A birth date should not be more than 60 years before or after a sibling's birth date.
It was proposed that Myhill-2, Myhill-9, and Myhill-23 be merged overt two years ago, but it never happened. There are multiple profile managers. I assume that the merge would be handled best by someone familiar with this profile.
