Biography

I have "a complicated relationship" with my wife, Susanne Noma Joan (Yeaw) Nakamura. I have two children, Kiana Taylor Kukiko Nakamura, born in 7 November 1992, and Kyle James Teruo Nakamura, born 27 April 1995. Both were born at La Habra Hospital, which later closed and was torn down. It was at the northwest corner of Lambert Road and Idaho Street, in La Habra, California.

As a child, I first wanted to be a veterinarian, since I have always loved animals. Growing up, we always had a dog and cat. Beginning in 3rd grade until junior high school, I wanted to be a fighter pilot, after I began reading about the air campaigns in Europe and the aircraft carrier battles in the Pacific during World War II. However, by 7th grade I realized, when I began wearing glasses, that since I no longer had perfect 20-20 vision and being short (only 4'9" in 8th grade), I wouldn't qualify to be a pilot in the U.S. Air Force. Since my father was an electrical mechanical draftsman at what was then North American [then North American Rockwell, then Rockwell International (now part of Boeing)], I also had an interest in science, technology, engineering and math. In 8th grade, we had to write a report about a vocation and I chose to write about electrical engineering. By my senior year of high school, I chose to study computer science (aka software engineering) in college.

When I was born, my parents were attending Bethany Baptist Church in Whittier, California, on Mills Avenue, near Telegraph. In 1971, the church suffered an unpleasant split and Whittier Area Baptist Fellowship (WABF) was born, where we met temporarily in the cafeteria at what was then McNally Junior High School in La Mirada, California. Then, we shared the campus of the Whittier United Methodist Church off of Cole Road, in Whittier, California, until we purchased virgin land at the corner of Colima and Mar Vista, also in Whittier, California, where WABF was constructed. Later WABF was renamed WACC - Whittier Area Community Church, under the leadership of the senior pastor, Dr. William "Bill" Ankerberg.

  • First-hand information. Entered by Cary Nakamura at registration.

I was born in 1963 at Whittier Presbyterian Hospital, which is now (in 2012) known as Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital, located at: 12401 Washington Boulevard, Whittier, CA 90602. My parents are Richard Teruo Nakamura and Elizabeth Yukiko Nakamura, both of whom were born in Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1928 and 1933, respectively. After getting married in Hawaii, they moved to California, where they lived in a rented house off of Shoemaker Avenue, in either Whittier or Santa Fe Springs (I'm not sure).

Two (2) years earlier, 18 December 1963, my sister, Joy Terumi Nakamura (now Joy Terumi Nakamura Lane) was also born at the same hospital.

I have lived in the following cities, in this order: La Mirada, California, 1963-1974, including Kindergarten thru 5th Grade Whittier, California, 1974-1987, 6th Grade thru college Hacienda Heights, California, 1987-2004 Temporarily in Fairfax, Virginia, in 1999 for 5 months Temporarily in Lexington, Massachusetts, 1999-2000 for 10 months Back to Hacienda Heights, California, 2000-2004 La Habra, California, 2004-2006 Whittier, California, 2006-present (2012)

Regarding the temporary residences listed above, in Virginia and Massachuetts, they were for short term assignments related to my job. During that time, my permanent address remained in Hacienda Heights.

In La Mirada, I attended Arlie F. Hutchinson Elementary School, Kindergarten through 5th Grade. In Whittier, I attended Olita Elementary School, in La Habra, for 6th Grade In Whittier, I attended Rancho Canada Junior High School for 7th and 8th Grades.

In Whittier, I attended Lowell High School, for 9th through 11th Grades, until the Fullerton Union High School District decided to close the school in 1980, due to declining high school enrollment in the district. That decision came after an initial recommendation was made by an ad hoc committee to close Sunny Hills High School. When that was rejected by the school board, the ad hoc committee recommended the closure of La Habra High School, which was also rejected by the school board. The school subsequently disbanded the ad hoc committee and made the decision to close Lowell High School.

While still living in Whittier, I attended La Habra High School for 12th Grade, where I graduated in 1981. Then, I attended California State University, Fullerton (CSUF) from 1981 through 1986, where I graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Computer Science (B.S. in C.S.).

After working at Hughes Aircraft Company during my last year of college, beginning in June 1985, first as a summer hire, then as a student, I hired on full time in 1986, where I worked as a computer programmer until 1995. At that time, with the downsizing of the Hughes site in Fullerton, California, I voluntarily left to go work at TRW, first in Redondo Beach, California, then in Carson, California (known within the company as Dominguez Hills, due to its proximity to California State University Dominguez Hills (CSUDH)). After taking temporary assignments at the TRW facility in Chantilly, Virginia, and as a contractor at Hanscom Air Force Base, Massachuetts, I returned to TRS in Dominguez Hills, where I continued to work until 2005. In 2006, I left TRW to return to what used to be part of Hughes Aircraft Company. The Raytheon Company purchased the Ground Systems Group of Hughes and subsequently created ThalesRaytheonSystems (also known as Thales Raytheon Systems or simply TRS) in approximately 2002. In February 2006, I joined TRS, first as a Software Project Manager, then became a Program Engineer in 2010. As of this writing in November 2012, my goal is to eventually become a Program Manager.

As of 2012, more information can be found about me on Facebook and LinkedIn.
