History from Find A Grave

Hugh Riley, the "Gentleman"[1]
The focus of this genealogical record will be the descendants of Hugh Riley, son of Miles. Hugh is the direct descendant of the Alabama Riley's. Hugh was born in 1652. He married Margaret Plummer, daughter of Thomas Plummer of Ann Arundle County, Maryland. Hugh and Margaret settled in Calvert County, Maryland, which became Prince George's County. Records indicate six children. Hugh is on record on May 1, 1668 as owning land in the area of what is now Washington, D.C. There is reference to this land being near the Duddington Manor Plantation, a landmark of then Bowie, Maryland. At one time, Hugh owned 5365 acres of land in the Prince George's county area. One such tract named Hogyard, or sometimes referred to as Hopyard. This tract is located in what is now Washington, D.C. The tract, present day, is approximately five blocks east of the Capital of the United States. Hugh sold this tract to a London businessman. Shortly afterwards, Hugh's son, Eliphaz, repurchased the tract. I referred to Hugh as "gentleman" because that is what he listed as his occupation on the land list for Maryland settlers during 1701 to 1730. Previous to this, he listed himself as farmer. I guess when you have 5365 acres of land you can afford to become a "gentleman." Hugh died in 1738. Most of Hugh Sr.'s children settled in the Prince George's area. Eliphaz remained in Prince George's and Montgomery counties. Solomon may have accompanied his nephews to North Carolina. Records are conflicting as to his history. It is thought that Solomon may have been a nickname for Samuel. The brothers have the same birth year. They could also have been twins. I find different death dates for each. Jane Lydia married Thomas Swearingen and settled in Berkley, VA. Her children would later go on to West Virginia. Eliphaz is the ancestor of the Alabama Riley's.
Hugh Riley Sr. was born in Prince Georges County, Maryland, formerly known as Calvert County. Hugh married Margaret Plummer, and they settled in Calvert County. Hugh Sr. also married twice more, to Mary Moore-Faulkner then Rebecca Penson, however, this narrative is concerned with the children of Hugh Sr. and Margaret. Although old Maryland records show that Hugh Riley Sr., was a carpenter by trade, he also occupied himself as a planter (farmer) and as a land surveyor. And, over the years in his lifetime, he acquired the skills necessary and sufficient wealth to enable him to become a successful land speculator. Commencing about 1688 according to records available, he began to acquire numerous tracts of land by Patents or deeds. In Colonial times, Maryland law required a person who bought or leased a tract of land to give it a name. Consequently, in every instance of a Patent or deed, one will find the name of the tract mentioned in the record. Some of the many tracts owned by Hugh Riley, just to name a few, were "Riley's Folly," "Ryley's Range," Labor," "Hogyard," "Poplar Thicket," "Green Spring," and etc. An index of the many land transactions entered into by him in the form of patents or indentures ~deeds) and selected extracts of those recorded documents can be found in Appendix D.
Mr. Donald Ray Barnes, a Certified Genealogist, wrote the following passages about Hugh Riley, Sr., in his article entitled "Kugh Riley and His Descendants" and printed in an issue of the Prince George's County Genealogical~ Society Bulletin in 1979.3
According to depositions taken in 1716 and 1719 HUGH RILEY,

Planter, was born 1652/63, place unknown. In early deeds he is styled carpenter and first appears in Anne Arundel County Court in 1676 when he received 335 Ibs. of tobacco from the estate of Wm. Jones. Apparently Hugh lived in Calvert County.

The following two profiles married, Perkins-5333 and Brown-277713, causing Riley-475 to be my 7th and 8th Great Grandfather.

See rootsweb research on O'Riley family attached to Maelmorda O'Riley (O'Riley-118); it says Ferrall was the father of Hugh Falidh and Miles Maelmorda was the father of Ferrall; it goes from Domnhall Ban O'Riley to Lydia Jane Riley

Hello,

Thanks for making contact. I received three identical messages and I am a bit unclear on exactly what you are telling me. Can you give me the rootsweb research link for the O'Riley family.

Thanks

I made an error about it being from rootsweb; it was something I received from papers my mother had when she did a tree, It was another family that the source came from rootsweb. I know rootsweb is not the best source but it was what I had for that other family. The person this source is attached to is Maelmorda O'Riley (abt. 1510 - abt. 1570) wiki id O'Riley-118; he is the father of Hugh O'Riley (O'Riley-66) and husband of Margaret O'Donnell. As it is hard to find sources for people this far back, I will not work on any more unless I have very reliable sources.

Name-8 and Riley-475 appear to represent the same person because: last name should be Riley
