He was a student in Cologne Germany in 1389 and dean of the cathedral at Munster until 1399. He was advisor to the Duke of Brabant , first for Anton of Burgundy and later for his son John IV of Brabant .Engelbrecht also played an important role in the realization of the marriage between John IV, Duke of Brabant and Jacoba of Bavaria, which would eventually lead to resurgent lasting strife. After the death of Jan IV around 1430 he entered the service of Philip the Good.[1]
Engelbrecht I of Nassau waved, because his two brothers remained childless, away the deanery and on the first of August, 1403 in Breda, the much older Engelbrecht van Nassau-Dillenburg and just 11 year old Johanna (Jehenne) van Polanen were married in Church, a big event for Dutch History, because by this marriage a branche of the Nassau family settled forgood in the Netherlands. Willem "de Zwijger" is a direct descendant of this couple. The 11 -year-old Johanna ( Jehenne ) van Polanen was the heiress of the Glories of Breda and the Lek and many other areas in the Netherlands . [1][2]
The wealth she brought in this marriage surpassed that of Nassau . Engelbrecht immediately settled in the castle in Breda that this marriage entailed . The first child was born only seven years after the date of marriage , Jan IV in 1410. Why the guardians of Polans saw a suitable marriage partner in Engelbrecht remains unclear. [1][2]
By this marriage began the rise of the House of Nassau in the Netherlands . [2]They had six children [1][2]
He inherited Grimbergen of a distant cousin.[3][2]
