Biography

Margaret was baptised in Caistor on 12 March 1703; her parents were Hugh and Ann Neal.[1]

She may have married Thomas Brocklesby in the neighbouring parish of Nettleton in May 1729[2] and/or, she may have married Francis Brocklesby in Nettleton in 1735 [3]

Margaret and Francis had five known children in Nettleton:

  1. Sarah (baptised 4 April 1736)
  2. William (baptised March 1737/38)
  3. George (baptised 16 January 1742/43)
  4. Hannah (baptised 18 April 1746)
  5. John (baptised April 1748)

Margaret Brocklesby was buried in Nettleton on 10 May 1773 [4]

Research Notes

Hugh Neal (abt.1655-1681) has been removed as the father of Margaret and the husband of Ann Sharp (abt.1683-) and a new Hugh Neal created who is the son of Hugh Neal (abt.1655-1681) , the husband of Ann Sharp (abt.1683-) and the father of Margaret because:

1. Margaret Neal (1703-1773) was linked to a father who died before she was born: Hugh Neal (abt.1655-1681) and

2. Hugh Neal (abt.1655-1681) was linked by a marriage to Ann Sharp (abt.1683-) which occurred in 1697 ie 16 years after his death

3. It is known from Margaret's baptism record in Caistor that her parents were Hugh Neal and his wife Ann

4. It is known from parish records that a Hugh Neal married Ann Sharp in Caistor in 1697[5]

5. It is also known from Caistor parish records that a different Hugh Neale was baptised in 1655 and that his parents were William and Martha Neale[6] and that this Hugh Neale married Anne Hancock in Caistor in 1678[7]

6. It has therefor been assumed that a generation has been omitted between Margaret and Hugh Neal (abt.1655-1681) and that he was her grandfather, not her father.
