Biography

William N. Neal, Jr. was born in 1779 at Conococheague Creek in Antrim Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, the son of William Neal and Mary Catherine Reynolds. Note: Antrim Townshiip is now in Franklin County, which was organized from Cumberland County in 1784. Antrim Township, Pennsylvania is 13 miles north of Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland.

About 1806, William Neal, Jr. removed from the Hagerstown area and moved to Big Mahoning creek, and he ran the first raft down it. His home was a half mile from Perrysville, where he cleared 3 acres. In his early days he was noted for his skills and a hunter and trapper, taking 40 bears one winter. Later he moved to North Mahoning Township [1][2]

William married first Mary Cunningham (of Jacksonville, Pennsylvania 1775-1869) about 1806. Their 10 children were:

  1. Abraham Loman Niel (1807–1894)
  2. Elisabeth "Betsy" Neal (Young) (1809–1849)
  3. Anna (Neal) McHenry (1811–1894)
  4. Catherine (Neal) Neal Sharp (b. 15 Apr 1813- )
  5. John B. Neal (1816–1903)
  6. Thomas N. Neal (1819–1877)
  7. Mary Reynolds (Neal) Purdy (1820-1915)
  8. Sarah (Neal) Chambers (1824–1887)
  9. Margaret "Peggy" (Neal) Pattison (1826–1907)
  10. Hardy R. Neal (1831–1925)

William married second Susan Neff (1798–1863) about 1813 in Somerset, Somerset, Pennsylvania. Their 7 children were:

  1. James Chambers Neal (1813–1883)
  2. Winfield Scott Neale (1816–1863)
  3. Amelia "Millie" (Neal) Uncapher/Unkerphire (1818/1825–1895)
  4. Cortes Leroy Neal (1821–1909)
  5. Euphemia Neal (1825-1880)
  6. Sanford Neal (1828–1901)
  7. Thomas Sharp Neal (1832-1925)

William passed away at age 89 in 1869 at the home of his son John, in West Mahoning Township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania, and was buried in the Neal Cemetery, Trade City, Indiana County, Pennsylvania.[3]

Notes

It is not clear why birth years of children do not conform to his two different wives marriage dates, but I assigned children in accordance with "Indiana County, Pennsylvania; her people, past and present, embracing a history of the county".[2] Perhaps the birth years for the children are incorrect as I copied them from familysearch.org and ancestry.com.

There is an ancestry record suggesting that William Neal was in the 1790 US Census in Mount PLeasant, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania but that is a different William Neal as evidence by William Neal being there into 1820 and 1830 when instead our William Neal was clearly in Mahoning as per the 1820 and 1830 US Census records below.

Neal-8193 and Neal-2783 appear to represent the same person because: same birth, parents and death. Duplicate.
