William Neale was born about 1695 in the Province of Maryland. He was the son of James Neale and his second wife, Elizabeth (Lord) Neale.[1]
William's father James died in 1727,[2] at the approximate age of seventy-three. William would have been about thirty-two and still single. His father left him 500 acres leased to Charles Rockes, Nathan Freeman, and Thomas Marrish as well as all the land at the Matta Woman ?? of George Hinson.[2] William, along with his mother Elizabeth and brother Benjamin, was an executor of the will.[2] The three of them were to divide all residual personal property between them.[2]
His mother Elizabeth died before April of 1734.[3] She had left him, her "well beloved son," and his sister Mildred, also said to be well beloved, as executors.[3] William received a tract of land by Machodoch Creek in Virginia. At that time the widow Berriman was living on the property. He also received seven slaves (listed individually in the will) as part of her bequests,[3] as well as half of her household goods, livestock and any residual of her personal estate (split with his sister Mildred).[3]
The names of nine children born to William and Ann were listed in his probate: John, Joseph, William, Elizabeth, Mary, Ann, Mildred, Catherine, and Sally.[4] William's will was written on the 29th of October 1765 and proved on the 10th of June 1766.[1][4]
To my oldest son John Neale the tract of land he now lives on, except for 180 acres for my second son Joseph Neale (with ----- Plantation).
To my third son William Francis Neale my plantation "Hinson's Lying" near Mattawoman
The remaining part of my personal estate, after my just debts are paid, to be equally divided between my three sons aforesaid (John, Joseph and William Francis) and my daughters Elizabeth, Mary, Ann, Mildred, Catherine and Sally
All of my moveable property to be equally divided between my sons and daughters.
That my son John Neale be sole Adminstrator of this will
There was also a William Neale born between 1707 and 1716. He was the son of Roswell and Mary (Brent) Neale. That William was under the age of 18 when mentioned in his Uncle William Chandler's will.[1]
Note: The will of William Neale that was on this profile belonged to the William that was the son of Roswell Neale. See his Death & Legacy section for said probation information.
NOTE: Raphael, Oswald, Leonard, and Charles are listed above but not documented in his will per the Maryland Historical Magazine. In studying his actual will his four (living) sons are listed as: Raphael Neale, Leonard Neale, Charles Neale and Francis Ignatious Neale.[6] More research will need to be done to determine if the children not listed in this William's will belong to the the William Neale, son of Roswell Neale (see Research Notes) .
Additional Note: In the will noted on his wife Elizabeth's profile, it is said she mentions sons William, Henry, and Benjamin along with daughters Mildred, Ann, Mary, and Margaret. As the sons don't match between the two probate records it will need to be determine which belonged to whom and the profiles updated accordingly.
3 December 2019: The probate information has been examined for both families (most likely related) and the children that are the son of William Neale and grandchildren of Roswell Neale have been removed from this biography.
William was born about 1705. He was the son of James Neale . He passed away about 1770.
