Sophia Neale was born 22 March 1848 in Bedworth, Warwickshire, England, and baptised 11 Jun 1848.[1] She is the daughter of Thomas Neale and Alice Cater.[2]
She came to Australia as an infant, along with her parents and two siblings, amongst the first Assisted Immigrants to arrive in Brisbane, aboard Artemisia on 13 December 1848.[3]
At the age of 18, she married William Scott on 14 January 1867 in the Wesleyan Church, Warwick, Queensland, Australia.[2] At the time her occupation was listed as a needlewoman, and her usual place of abode was Goomburra.[2] After their marriage, they lived in Allora, where William was employed in the store, and later a mill.[4]
At the age of 68, as a widow (William had died in 1906), Sophia, along with several of her family, sailed from Sydney on the SS Ventura on 31 May 1916 for Benton Harbor, Michigan, USA.[6]
The family became part of the House of David, a religious commune in Benton Harbor, Berrien County, Michigan.[7]
Sophia appeared on the 1920 US Census at House of David, Benton, aged 70, widowed, the head of house.[8]
Sophia died on 16 April 1924, at the age of 76, and is buried in the Crystal Springs Cemetery, Benton Harbor.[9]
