Bernard was born in 1913, and passed away from Parkinson's disease in 1992.
He joined the Canadian Army in 1939, and served in the Mediterranean theatre and played a prominent role in freeing Texel Island, Netherlands from German occupation. He received an MBE and the Order of Orange-Nassau for his wartime activities: the MBE for his participation during the Battle of the Liri Valley[1] and the Order of Orange-Nassau for helping to liberate Texel Island. During the War, he met Beatrice Bradley, marrying her in 1943.
After the war, he joined the Department of Indian Affairs, and served as Superintendent of Indian Education. He joined Thomas Nelsons and Sons (Canada), publishers, in 1951, becoming President of Nelson's Canada in 1955. He joined Science Research Associates (SRA) Canada as President in 1964, until his retirement in 1976. During that time, he relocated to his home town of Victoria, BC in 1969.
Bern was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 1983 and passed away, surrounded by family, in 1992.
