Biography

Dinah was born in 1740. Dinah Nee ... She passed away in 1819. [1]

She appears on Family Search and Ancestry as Dinah or Dianna Nee, connected to a Charles Henry Kemp. Family Search shows a note she was Monocan Tribe, Virginia Sioux, Powhatan Autocracy. Another note says "A slave of William Davis" with no further information. This is referencing to the Parrish Records of Middlesex Virginia, where I see only an entry for a birth of one Dinah, daughter of Sue, a slave belonging to William Davis with no other information. It does confirm the birth date of 10 April 1740.

There are many Kemp family pages on the internet, all have this lady as the correct spouse, and no mention of her being a slave. The Kemp line appears to be of the stature in the colony for many generations, making it a bit of a stretch that one would marry a slave. History back then was written by the colonists that may have viewed Native Americans as something to be hidden, either from an unfounded feeling of shame, or to protect the person from being sent away. From all accounts I can find so far, she is Native American. She is one of my ancestors, my DNA matching Kemp families as well. I am researching her right now, so far showing her father as a James Seay Moon 1715-1767 Virginia, Native American, Possible Powhatan lineage or Leni Lenape clan. I currently show her mother as a Judith "Sue" Moon, the "Sue" possibly to mean Sioux, also Native American, 1720-1759 Virginia. work in progress, Will let the profile manager take it from here. I see a lot of Kemp relatives along with me on the sidebar and I gedmatch to them. Hopefully someone will have more info on this most important woman who deserves to have her history and lineage written correctly.
