Research Notes

There seems to be a discrepancy in Nancy's account of her husband, Major John Nelson's Service. According to the Biography in his FindaGrave Memorial, she stated that "he continued as a supernumerary til the treaty of peace & in eighteen hundred thirty two," but in the next paragraph, she is quoted as saying that he died on February 18, 1827. She may have been referring to the Treaty of Constantinople, which freed Greece from the Turkish Ottoman Empire; or the Treaty of San Francisco, a.k.a. the Treaty of Peace With Japan. She was probably referring to the Black Hawk War, because Chief Black Hawk was a member of the Sauk tribe, and they had fought on the side of the British during the War of 1812. Chief Blackhawk led about 500 warriors in an uprising in the spring and summer of 1832; about 7,000 members of the U.S. Army and various State Militias annihilated them, killing perhaps 600 of them (presumably, about 100 of them were their women and children). Although, presumably, in Nancy's mind, that's when the War of 1812 ended, she obviously realized that her husband had died before the end of that War.[3] Vaughan-3997 14:55, 24 January 2020 (UTC)

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
