Biography

NOTE before changing:
His father may be Neville-1439. We are using the Complete Peerage version where he is the grandfather.

Sanders:

Ashby and Toynton, which were held by the king when Domesday Book was compiled, were granted in 1162 by King Henry II to Gilbert de Neville, who died 1166-9. Geoffrey, s[on] and h[eir], d[ied] circa Mich[almas] 1193.

Keats-Rohan and other authors believe he was the one who held four knights fees of Manasser Arsic in 1166.

He was possibly the Gilbert who appears in the Lindsey Survey which was compiled 1115-8, and a tenancy under the archbishop in roughly 1120. Keats-Rohan and Complete Peerage believe that was an earlier Gilbert, perhaps even the one who appeared in Domesday Book in Lincolnshire. Keats-Rohan possibly even sees him as this Gilbert's father. See Neville-1439.

He witnessed the foundation charter of Revesby Abbey in 1142, a charter of Ranulph, Earl of Chester ca 1142-53, and a notification by Robert, Earl of Leicester ca 1160-63.

Between 1150 and 1160, he granted to Kirkstead Abbey land in Great Sturton, co. Lincoln, with the goodwill of his son and heir apparent, Geoffrey. Gilbert's sons William and Walter witnessed the grant.[1]

Between 1156 and 1160, he was founder, with his brother Alan, of Tupholme abbey.

There seems to be a lot of conflicting information out there, and even many of the published works do not match!

Interestingly, in the Pedigrees of the county Families of Yorkshire, there is no Geoffrey (son of Gilbert I), instead, the direct lineage presents: Gilbert (III) (m. Johanna de Clare) as the son of Gilbert (I) (m. Philicia de Damoys).

This however also conflicts with the Charlemagne ancestry lines, which does put Geoffrey in between the two Gilberts, listing him as the husband of Johanna de Clare (with Gilbert (III) having no spouse listed.

Given Gilbert (I) birth around 1050, it seems more logical that there is another Geoffrey(?) between the two Gilberts, however this causes more confusion around spouses!

If anyone manages to find more detailed and credible information, I am very keen to confirm the accuracy of my ancestors (Gilbert III being my 26th GGF)

See these sources, too:

Gilbert II seems too young to be the one who married Joanna/Johanna de Clare. Should she be connected as wife of Gilbert I instead?

Andrew, I'm not aware of any...
Johanna Clare comes from the Stemmata Robertson, pages 239 and 255. https://archive.org/details/stemmatarobertso00robe/page/254/mode/2up. Philicia, on the other hand, appears to be spurious. I've seen no source for her whatsoever.

Do we have any sources for the wives/wife?

Neville-1697 and De Neville-241 appear to represent the same person because: same name, same father, same location, same time span
Neville-1697 and Neville-570 appear to represent the same person because: same name, same time frame, same place, all 3 children are his, Geoffrey is father http://www.thepeerage.com/p76.htm#i751
