Biography

Jane was one of the 2 daughters and co-heiresses of Thomas Neville of Cotterstock, Northants, England, by his wife Alice Wauton, daughter of _____ Wauton, of Basmead, in Eaton Socon, Beds.

Her father Thomas was the 2nd son of Thomas Neville of Holt (Leics), esq, descended from the Nevilles of Rolleston, and his wife Isabel Griffin, daughter of Nicholas Griffin of Braybrook, esq.

Her sister and co-heiress Anne married Sir John St. John of Bletsoe, Beds.

Jane married William Chamberlain alias Spicer, of Normanton-on-Soar, Notts. They had 3 sons and 6 daughters, including Amphyllis, wife of 1stly Richard Faldo and 2ndly Thomas Sheppard, both of Maulden, Beds.

Jane made her will on 27th October 1575, evidently widowed by then, and it was proved at York only 3 days later.

Research notes

The Visitations seem to be the only "primary" sources. Nobody is mentioning any dated records.

The Nevilles of Holt are dealt with in detail by Farnham ("The Manor of Holt", in Trans. Leics. Arch. Soc, Vol. 13 (1923-24), pp. 199-244, PDF). Jane's father is mentioned in the wills of both his parents, Thomas and Isabel (Griffin), but (being a 2nd son, of 5) is not otherwise discussed. Purchased property was bequeathed to the 3 younger sons, but Cotterstock and Cottingham are not mentioned.

The Wautons had been tenants of Basmead for centuries, but are not well documented (VCH Beds Vol. 3, pp. 189-202). In the early 16th century (presumably during the lifetime of Alice) Sir Thomas Wauton died leaving two daughters and co-heiresses, Cicely (who married Sir Nicholas Luke) and ___ (who seems to have married Thomas FitzHugh). It's a mystery where Alice fits in or how she came to marry Neville.

Thoroton mentions Chamberlains in Normanton parish in 20 Edw III (1346) (Vol. 3, pp. 92-96).

Jane was a descendant of Roger le Bigod, Robert FitzWalter, William de Lanvallei, and Henry II, and a great-grandmother of the "gateway immigrant" Thomas Bressey.
