Biography

Ursula Neville was the youngest daughter of George Neville, K.G., K.B., by his third wife Mary Stafford.[1][2][3][4][5] Her date of birth is unknown and is estimated. Her birthplace is also unknown. Her father was Lord Bergavenny (in Abergavenny, Wales) from 1512 until his death in 1536. He also held positions and lands in Kent and he was buried there. Ursula could have been born in either place or elsewhere.

Ursula married, as his first wife, Warham Saint Leger, Knt., second but eldest surviving son of Anthony Saint Leger, K.G. and Agnes Warham,[1][5] about 1550[6] or perhaps in 1549 at St. Martin, Ludgate, London.[7] According to Richardson, they had five sons and four daughters, although only the names of one son and one daughter have been adequately proven:

  • Anthony,[6] Knt., died 1603; married Mary Scott and had issue[1]
  • Anne[6] (or Agnes), married Thomas Digges, Esq.[1]

Ursula died in 1575. The place of her death and burial are unknown. Warham married second to Emmeline Goldwell[1][5] by 1577.[6]

Research Notes

Disputed Daughter

Wife of William Kingsmill: Richardson states that Ursula and Warham St Leger had a daughter (name unknown) who married William Kingsmill.[1] Some sources state that the wife of William Kingsmill was the daughter of another Warham St Leger (Ursula's husband's nephew of the same name), Warham St Leger (son of William).[5][8] See the research notes on the profile of Ursula's husband, Warham St Leger

Other Children

The only children of Warham and Ursula known with certainty are Anthony (named in Warham's will) and Anne who married Thomas Digges. Thomas Digges' 1591 will leaves bequests of £50 to his "brothers" George St Leger and William St Leger "who are otherwise unidentified, but appear to have been sons of Sir Warham St Leger".[5]

St_Leger-12 for a Dorothy b 1515 was attached as daughter to Ralph St Leger & Elizabeth Haute... if Ursula has a sister named Dorothy, it may be that she named a daughter Dorothy (albeit not one born 1515). The Dorothy St Leger who married William Kingsmill & was living 1675 was the daughter of her husaband's nephew.

Note: Richardson does not include a birth date for her (in either MCA or RA). Royal Ancestry Vol I, p 325 does show that her father and his 3rd wife, who married about June 1519, had 8 children & lists Ursula last among their five daughters. It also shows that he married a 4th time and had a daughter before his death (will dated 4 June 1535, proved 24 Jan. 1535/6).

This information rules out the 1513 birth given by AFN and makes 1528 a reasonable estimate.
