Jesse was born about 1730, probably North Carolina; his place of birth is uncertain since his father's residence at that time is not known. Jesse Newbery[sic] "of Bladen County" wrote his will on 14 Apr 1786.[1] His will is not recorded in the will books, but the original will with his signature contains the date Apr 1792 written on the outside of the packet of one of the copies. Another copy contains the date Jan 1796, and the names Susannah Newberry and [illeg]mes Newberry are written on it; the will may have been copied for administering the estate of Jesse's son, James.
His wife's name was Deborah, but it seems apparent she had died before Jesse wrote his will; he makes no provisions for her. Her name is evidenced in deed records in Bladen and Cumberland Counties as early as 1763.[2]
In his will, he names the follow legatees, in the order named:
Witnesses were Robert Edwards, Mary Scriven and Tobias Ingram. In the will, Jesse stipulates that when son James turns age 17 on 23 Jan 1787, James is to enter into co-executorship with his brother Isaac.
