Leonard was born in 1893. He is the son of William Newberry and Eliza Foster. [1]
Before WW1, Leonard was a clerk at the Kaiapoi Woollen Company. He signed up to serve in the Canterbury Infantry Battalion in 1914 and was on active service in Egypt, Gallipoli and Western Europe. During his war service, he contracted tuberculosis and this was his eventual cause of death.[2]
He died in 1929 aged 36.[3]
