Biography

Sarah Ann Newberry was born in 1812 in Galloway, Gloucester County, New Jersey. Sarah was the first child of Daniel Newberrry and Mary Thomas. [1]

There were at least four related Newberry families that left Gloucester County, New Jersey, in 1818 and migrated to Clermont County, Ohio: 1.) Daniel Newberry, husband of Mary Thomas, and their four children, Sarah Ann, Margaret, Edward Thomas, and Christiana; his parents 2.) William and Sarah (Raziner) Newberry and their family, their son, 3.) Elias, husband of Nancy Henderson; and William's brother, 4.) Daniel and Elizabeth (Smallwood) Newberry and their family; plus the younger sister of William and Daniel, Susannah, who was not yet married. [2] Sarah Ann Newberry was six years old.

"They settled in Tate Township, near the present town of Bethel, Ohio, located about 10 miles north of the Ohio River. This was the region known as the "Jersey Settlement" because so many families from New Jersey settled there. It was in the bleak surroundings of a primitive frontier environment that the Newberry families began anew. The initial back-breaking job of building cabins and clearing the land for cultivation had to be rapidly completed for basic survival. No doubt, the first year brought great hardship upon them as they worked hard to establish their new homes and work their land to fruition. The 1820 Census confirms that Daniel Newberry and his family were residents of Tate Township, Clermont County, Ohio, and that he was a farmer." [2]

Sarah Ann Newberry married Calvin L. Riley on July 18, 1830. [3]

The Riley family moved to Marion County, Iowa by 1850. [4]
