Matthew Newby, (1793 - 6 Jan 1853)
In the year 1793 in Chesterfield, Virginia, Matthew Newby was born probably the son of Thomas Newby (1771 – 24 Mar 1845) and Ann Adkin, (1772 - Jan 1836) .
On 28 Sept 1820 in Chesterfield County, Virginia, 27-year-old Matthew Newby married 22-year-old Ann Brooks daughter of Martin Brooks and Ann (Snelling) Newby.
In 1836 several important deaths occurred that affected both the Brooks and the Newby families. Marriage had brought the families together but death presented challenges and change. In hindsight, Matthew Newby appears to be one catalyst for seeking out alternatives on where to live. Although Ann's sister, Polly, married Matthew's brother, Newman, they decided not to join the group that moved to Limestone, Alabama.
The group included the patriarch, Martin Brooks, his daughter, Rebecca Brooks, his son, Equilla and his 2 sons, George and Major, his daughter, Ann and her husband, Matthew Newby and their 6 children.
Together Matthew Newby and Ann Brooks had 9 known children, 4 daughters, and 5 sons. The first 6 children were born in Chesterfield County, Virginia. The last 3 children were born in Limestone, Alabama. Ann B. Newby died from complications associated with giving birth to Benjamin Benton, (10 Sept. 1838) on 10 Nov 1838. In chronological order the known children are:
