Biography

[1] 1881 - Elias Newby died March 27, 1881 and is buried in 'Cadiz Friends Cemetery', Cadiz, Henry Co., IN

[2]Elias Newby was born in Randolph County, North Carolina October 16th, 1798, a son of Joseph and Penelope (Henley) Newby. His first wife was Lydia Presnall, a daughter of John (1778-1856) and Hannah Liter Presnall (1784-1862). Lydia Newby was born in North Carolina January 15th, 1803 and died in Harrison Township, Henry County, Indiana February 6th, 1835. Lydia Newby and her parents are buried in the Clear Springs Friends Cemetery in Harrison Township. Elias and Lydia Newby were the parents of five children, William Penn (1824-1884), Mary (b. 1826), Penelope (b. 1828), Lydia N. (1830-1912), and Jane (b. 1834).

On May 28th, 1840 at Rich Square, Elias Newby married Tabitha Bond. She was born in Guilford County, North Carolina Mat 3rd, 1808, a daughter of Benjamin and Mary (Williams) Bond. Elias and Tabitha Newby had twin daughters, Eliza Ann (1841-1925), who married John Payne, and Elizabeth D. (1841-1925), the second wife of Peter Shaffer (1825-1903).

Elias Newby died March 27th, 1881 and was buried in the Cadiz Friends Cemetery. The epitaph on his tombstone reads: "Dying is but going home." Tabitha Newby lived 15 years following her husbands death. Her death occurred November 7th, 1896 at the home of her daughter, Elizabeth D. Shaffer. She was also buried at Cadiz.
