Ann was born in about 1779. She was the daughter of William Newby and Mary Unknown.
She may have been christened as "Nancy" on 14 October 1779 at St. Thomas's, Liverpool, Lancashire[1].

Ann married William Varty on 18 October 1799 at Saint Peter Church Street, Liverpool, Lancashire, by George Monk, Curate.[3] The witnesses were Betsy Newby and J. Forshaw.
They went on to have 12 children, some of whom died young.

Ann and her husband William later lived with their four daughters at Ward's House in Hackney. He died on 10 April 1845.
