Disputed Origins

This profile was previously attached as the daughter of Phillipe Newgate and his wife Jane (Hoo) Newgate. Their son John Newgate, of Boston, in his will refers to Thomas Townsend of Lynn as his "brother-in-law." The reference to "brother-in-law" is ambiguous, and may also mean that Mary was a sister of John Newgate's third wife Anne, whose surname is unknown. There is a baptism in parish records for John Newgate, but no record of a Mary Newgate born to Philip and Jane has been found.[1]

Biography

Birth

Date: 1615
Place: Tynsworth, Southwick, Northumberland, England
Date Alternate: 1598[2]
Place Alternate: Alnwick, Northumberland Unitary Authority, Northumberland, England[3]

Marriage

Mary's husband, Thomas Townsend, is on record as immigrating to America in 1637[4]. Lydia, Mary's oldest daughter, was born in 1630, therefore Mary and Thomas must have been married in England.

Death

Date: 28 FEB 1692
Place: Lynn, Essex, Massachusetts, USA[5]

FYI: There is an indexed 1588 baptism record (no image) for Marie, daughter of Philip Newgate here: "England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975", database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:V5G4-D5D : 19 March 2020), Philip Newegate in entry for Marie Newegate, 1588. So apparently John Newgate DID have a sister named Mary/ie. I'm just starting to look into the English Newgates and Hoos and don't have any more info on Marie. I'm primarily interested in her "brother" John and won't be researching Marie but will post if something else pops up.

If confirmed that wife is Mary Newgate from post below additional research in Ancestry indicates she was the daughter of John Newgate born 1580 Horningpheath, Suffolk, England and died 4 Sep 1665 Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts

Randy, thanks for looking in on this profile. Hopefully this information will help you and others on your genealogy journey.

Re: those ancestry sources, unfortunately they are all problematic and here's why.

New England Marriages to 1700 (Torrey) is not technically a source, he is best described as an uncritical aggregator of sources. With respect to this marriage, he did not claim a last name for Mary, just used the underline symbol indicating unknown. He simply noted that Thomas Townsend was described as the brother-in-law of John Newgate which is already discussed on this profile and does not prove her surname. If you'd like to look further into this, a few of the sources Torrey cited were NEHGR articles 13:334, 29:106, 33:61 (signature), 88:80. Actually this is a big problem with the ancestry.com presentation of Torrey's work, they don't (if I recall correctly) list his sources and more importantly his short-hand like question marks indicating whether a surname came from a marriage record. You can see that on americanancestors.org which does require a subscription. You can see the original scanned images of Torrey for free on familysearch that includes his sources etc but it is incredibly hard to read his messy tiny handwriting.

"US and International Marriages" on ancestry is an auto-aggregated database of "stuff" that includes completely unsourced user submissions and even user queries to genealogy websites, so it is about as far from reliable as can be. If you can actually trace any given entry to find the true source behind it, then you can use it as a "hint" to find actual sources. Ancestry themselves describes it as "...extracted from a variety of sources including family group sheets and electronic databases. Originally, the information was derived from an array of materials including pedigree charts, family history articles, querie."

Re: the Alabama US Surnames "source", the less said the better. It is self-described as "... providing biographical information on individuals who lived in Alabama." which raises obvious question number one. It is also described as containing "...newspaper clippings, obituaries, local and family histories, donated family research and records, extracts from censuses, research requests made to the archives, and other items." i.e. a bunch of stuff from who knows where of completely variable quality. Again, if you can find the real source behind it, then it can be useful as a hint or guide but is absolutely not considered a reliable source. Here is a list of PGM reliable sources, most projects on WikiTree have their own list focused on particular geographies or time periods. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Puritan_Great_Migration_Project_Reliable_Sources

I'm not trying to be discouraging, I hope this helps you cast a more critical eye on sources for genealogy facts and assertions. Thanks for helping keep WikiTree genealogy at a high level of quality.

detached parents with notes, disputed origins on this profile, surname on this profile unknown, protected.

ready for merges to be completed

With no verifiable evidence she was the sister of John Newgate and some indications she was the sister of John's third wife Anne (unknown) [Hunt] [Draper] as discussed by Anderson and by Lindberg in The Essex Genealogist (see Joe Cochoit's comment on Thomas' profile) among other sources I believe she should be disconnected from these parents and LNAB set to unknown.

Sounds like a good idea.

There is two other profiles that should merge into this. One is a pending merge, the other an Unmerged Match. The latter has no info in it, but is only Public rather than Open. So, once the name on this profile is changed, please lock it to prevent name changes. Thank you.

There is no definitive proof that her surname was Newgate which places her parentage and birth locations in doubt. The sole reference to her origins is that she was the sister of Anne, wife of John Newgate. The term brother-in-law, which John Newgate uses to describe Thomas Townsend in his will, applies equally to the husband of a sister-in-law as well as to the husband of a sister as the term was commonly used at the time. The Townsend genealogy cited above is of the opinion that there were probably two wives due to the phrasing of Thomas' will when calls sons John and Andrew sons of his "now wife Mary". A first wife named Elizabeth is shown on Thomas' profile but totally lacks evidence and has some logically impossible claims. However, a first wife would permit a later date to accommodate the children born before 1637 and allow a later marriage and birth year for Mary.

Newgate-13 and Newgate-1 are not ready to be merged because: putting these back to an unmerged match, since no info about which set of parents might be correct has been added.

Newgate-1 and Newgate-13 appear to represent the same person because: Hi! These have been in an unmerged match for a while. I'm re-proposing the merge as a way of asking if any progress has been made on which set of parents is correct. If none, please re-postpone them (set them back to unmerged match). Could you also look at Newgate-21, Newgate-20, and Newgate-23? I think those could/should all be merged away. Thanks!

When I added sources for this profile I got a red warning about the age of the mother and some of the children. So going by the marriage date of this couple, 1630, here are how the children are added:

John b. 1610; this one needs to be deleted from the family.

Henry b. 1626, is born abt. 4 yrs before the marriage and should be deleted.

Lydia b. 1630 is probably fine.

Richard b. 1631 is fine.

John b. 1635 is fine.

Samuel b. 1638 is fine.

John b. 1640 is fine.

Elizabeth b. 1644 is probably borderline age wise for the mother, but the next

John b. 1674 simply cannot be and should be deleted.

Mary and Thomas appear to be my 10th GG Parents so I am very interested in helping to fix this if that would be OK? Joan Williams Wagner, 27 Jul 16.
