SAD FATALITY NEAR TABULAM.- TWO CHILDREN DROWNED.- On Tuesday afternoon last, two children named Charles and Clara Newitt were drowned in a water hole near Captain's Creek. The family had only recently arrived in the district, and their step-father, a man named John Nane, had just succeeded in obtaining work on Mr. Z. Benn's road contract at that place. On the afternoon in question, the two children were sent by their mother for some water. About ten minutes afterwards, as they did not return, she asked another little girl, if she had seen them, and was told that there was a bucket on the bank, but the children were not to be seen. She at once ran down to the water-hole to which they had gone, and arriving saw the little girl's hood and one of the cans she had been carrying floating on the water. She at once gave the alarm to her husband, who jumped into the water and brought out the little girl. Owing to the muddy nature of the hole and the numerous reeds, it was nearly five minutes before he could find the boy. With the assistance of Mr. James Harrison, who meanwhile arrived on the scene, and other willing helpers, every available means known to to those present were adopted to restore animation but without success. It is not known precisely how the sad event occurred, but it is supposed that the little girl slipped off a rock that slopes steeply into the water, and on the top of which one of the buckets was found already filled, and that her brother was drowned in attempting to save her. At the inquest held, on Wednesday, before Mr. L. E. Cope, District Coroner, a verdict of accidental death was returned. Much sympathy was expressed for the family in their bereavement which found practical expression in a subscription list, towards which some £12 was collected immediately after the inquest, while it is understood that other sums have been added since.-Expresss.

DROWNING AT TABULAM.- On Tuesday last a distressing case of drowning occurred at Tabulam, when two children named Chas. and Clara Newitt lost their lives. They were sent by their mother to a hole for some water, but not returning, and the bucket being seen near the hole without the children, she ran down, and saw the girl's hood in the water. She immediately called ber husband (step-father of the children), who quickly recovered the bodies, but all efforts to restore animation were fruitless. It is supposed the girl slipped into the hole, and that her brother was drowned in trying to rescue her. The family were new arrivals in the locality, and practical sympathy was extended them by collecting a substantial sum of money for them.
