There is no way to guess if you James is 17th, 18th, 19th or 20th century. If you keep it all private, at least state publicly which century he lived in so it will be easier for other relatives of other James Newmans to create a rejected match and help narrow the list of who your James is. Thanks.

The help pages give lots of information about the process, best to start with 'Before you import a GEDCOM'.
