John Taylor Newman was born in December, 1860, in Sevier County, Tennessee, the son of Thomas and Mary/Polly Newman.

The family lived in Sevier County, and in 1871 John married Sarah Romines. [2] They moved to Jefferson County, Tennessee at some point, and were living there in 1900 and 1910.
