Biography

James was born in 1811 in Virginia, United States. He was the son of Winston Newman and Conah (Nolen) Nowlin. [1]

In the 1830 census James (age about 19) was living in Patrick, Virginia, United States.[2]

When James was about 21 he married SarahSally Flippin on 9 February 1832 in Patrick, Virginia. The couple had 11 children: George W. Newman, Catherine Frances Newman, Lucy A Newman, Mary Embazetta Newman, Joseph Newman, Samuel J Newman, Ruth Ellen Newman, James Madison Newman, John Newman, Elizabeth Newman and Conne F Newman.[3][4][5]

In the 1840 census James (age about 29) was living in Patrick, Virginia, United States.[6]

In the 1850 census James (age about 39) was living in Southern District, Patrick, Virginia.[1]

In the 1860 census James (age about 49) was living in South District, Patrick, Virginia, United States.[7]

In the 1870 census James (age about 59) was living in Carters Mill, Patrick, Virginia.[8]

In the 1870 census James (age about 59) was living in Dan River, Patrick, Virginia, United States.[8]

In the 1880 census James (age about 69) was living in Dan River, Patrick, Virginia, USA.[9]

When James was about 76 he married L. A. Bowman on 18 September 1887 in Patrick County, Virginia.[10][11]
