Biography

Peter Newton[1] aka Piers[2]

Peter was born in 1442,[3] in Shropshire, England.[2]

Peter was the son of Richard Newton and Joanne Newton.[3]

Peter married Maud Cholmondley.[2]

Peter and Maud were the parents of:

  1. John Newton;
  2. Juliana Newton;

On 1 April, 12 Henry VII [1497], Peter Newton, Clerk of Signet of Arthur, Prince of Wales, had a Warrant at Ludlow for a lease for 21 years of the lordship of Shotwick, at a yearly rent of £24 3s 4d, to which the Earl of Derby had previously held the lease.[1]

On 24 October, 14 Henry VII [1498], Peter Newton, who was the Secretary of Arthur, Prince of Wales, and one of his Councillors, had a Warrant at Ludlow, for the grant of the wardship and marriage of Peter, son and heir of Thomas Danyell.[1]

On 14 October, 17 Henry VII [1501], still Secretary of Arthur, Prince of Wales, Peter had a Warrant at Beawdeley, for appointment to be Park-keeper of Shotwick Park.[1] On 23 August, 16 Henry VIII [1524], John Southall was appointed Park-keeper because of Peter's death.[4]

Peter also had a Warrant to hold the office of Seneschall of the Manor of Frodsham.[1]

Peter Newton died on or before 23 August, 1524.[4] at Tabley, Cheshire, England.[3]

Research notes

According to the Visitation of Shropshire, Peter Newton, knight, sheriff in 1503, was the son of John Newton of Beverley. He married Maud Cholmeley the daughter of Richard Cholmeley and they had Arthur, Thomas, Charles, Mary (wife of Thomas Acton), and John.[5]

In the will of Sir Peter Newton, of Petton, Salop, proved 6 February 1526, he requested to be buried in Ludlow St Lawrence. He mentioned sons in law Richard Banaster, Thomas Acton and John Floyde, his wife Maud, sons Richard, John, Arthur, Thomas, Charles, Geoffrey, and daughters Jane and Margaret.[6]
