Humphrey was born in 1466. only son and heir of Richard Newton of Newton, near Prestbury, Cheshire, and his wife, Jane Lowe of the Lowe family of Denby, Derbyshire. but he had at least 5 sisters . [1]
1490s Steward on several estates in Cheshire and north Staffordshire, including those of the duchy of Lancaster and the bishop of Coventry and Lichfield, holding their manor courts. [1]
1497 he inherited his fathers estate and preferred agricultural improvements to home modifications and invested in a fulling mill. [1]
1490 Humphrey Newton married Ellen Fitton daughter of Thomas Fitton of Pownall, improving his social standing.
They had 11 children, 7 survived to adulthood[2]
In c1506 his father-in-law died adding Pownall Hall, eight tenancies and several hundred acres of land in the townships of Pownall and Bollin in the parish of Wilmslow to his estate. [1]
He wrote a commonplace book, recently recovered from obscurity .which included a mixture of documents relating to the management of the Newton estate and the acquisition of Pownall Hall. He also wrote poems.[3]Though a minor poet, this with the other records give a rare view of the private life and beliefs of the gentry. His work is an important addition to known authors of his era providing a large secondary source of dialect and provincial words.[4][5]
