Biography

"Nazareth, widow of Sir Thomas Southwell of Norfolk and youngest daughter of Sir John Newton of East Harptree, Somerset, and Barre's Court, Gloucestershire, and his wife Margaret, daughter of Sir Anthony Poyntz."[1]

"Nazareth Newton was the daughter of Sir John Newton and a cousin to Sir Robert Dudley. Her first marriage was to Sir Thomas Southwell of Woodrising in Norfolk. The family was noted for its catholicism but this didn’t prevent the widowed Nazareth from serving Elizabeth I. One of her daughters with Southwell was called Elizabeth. She became the mistress of the Earl of Essex and gave birth to his illegitimate son Walter Devereux."[2]

"NAZARET NEWTON (c.1541-April 16, 1583) Nazaret Newton was the daughter of Sir John Newton or Cradock of East Harptree, Somerset (d.1568) and Margaret Poyntz. She was a gentlewoman of the privy chamber in the 1560s and married, as his third wife, Sir Thomas Southwell of Woodrising Hall, Norfolk (c.1542-c.1572), by whom she had two children, Robert (1563-October 12, 1599) and Elizabeth (1569-1602+). Her second husband was Thomas, 3rd baron Paget (d. 1590), by whom she had a son, William (1572-1629). After they married, Paget dismissed all of his wife’s servants. Gilbert Talbot called him an “evell husband” in a letter in 1573 and Nazaret had formally separated from him in 1581/2. In 1578, Queen Elizabeth visited Woodrising Hall on progress, even though both the Southwells and the Pagets were known recusants. In fact, in 1583, Lord Paget fled England for Paris. Portrait: Susan E. James lists one painted in c.1578 at age 31, which would push Nazaret's birthdate ahead to c.1547."[3]

Elizabeth SOUTHWELL

Born: 1567

Died: AFT 1602

Notes: was at court as a maid of honor by 1588/9 and in 1591 suffered from “lameness in her leg” —she was pregnant. Thomas Vavasour took the blame for her condition and was imprisoned for misconduct. What happened to Elizabeth is unclear, other than that she gave birth to a boy named Walter (b. 1591 - d.1641) who was given to Lettice, Countess of Essex and Leicester, to be raised at Drayton Bassett. She may have returned to court, but more likely she was simply still referred to as a maid of honor. In May 1595, Queen Elizabeth learned that the father of young Walter was not Thomas Vavasour but rather Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex. The Queen was furious, not only because the child had been fathered by Essex, her on and off again favorite, but because she had been deceived. By 22 Mar 1598, when Sir Barentyne Moleyns (or Molyns, Mullens, Mullins), visited Simon Forman the astrologer, Elizabeth Southwell had agreed to marriage with Moleyns. Moleyns was almost blind, weakened by wounds he’d received in service to the Queen, and “notorious for his ugliness”. Forman’s records indicate disgusting health problems as well, and yet, in Apr, he was considering abandoning the match with Elizabeth if he could persuade another woman, Mary Hampden, to marry him. Then, in Jun, he had a license to marry Elizabeth Southwell, but she had apparently changed her mind. In notes made later, in 1600, Forman noted that Elizabeth Southwell had three suitors and that she was thirty years old. She was already married to Moleyns by that time, since she attended the christening of Robert Sidney’s daughter Barbara in Dec 1599 as Lady Moleyns. In 1602 she gave birth to their only child, a son.
