Biography

Sally's maiden name is unsourced. Census records give her a birth date between 1825 and 1830. The 1855 New York State Census says that she was born in Ulster County.

• In 1850, Sally Rose lives with her husband Moses (b. 1810) and their three children in Middletown, Delaware County, New York. The children are George (b. 1845), Auzena (b. 1847), and Auzelus (b. 1848). Moses is a farmer.^[1]
• In 1855, Sally Rose lives with her four children in Middletown. Her children are George (b. 1845), Auzine (b. 1848), Auziller (b. 1849), and Horatio (b. 1828). This Census record gives her eldest son's birth location as Ulster County so the family may have been living there around 1845. Her eldest daughter's birth location is Delaware County so they would have moved there before about 1848. This Census says that Sally is now a farmer. ^[2] The back pages of this census record describe her output for the year: 6 tons of hay, 20 bushels of potatoes, 200 pounds of butter, 12 pounds of wool, and 10 yards of flannel. The farm included 24 acres of improved land and 25 acres of unimproved land and was valued at $600.
• In 1860, Sally lives with three of her children in Shandaken, Ulster County, New York. The children at home are Anzine (b. 1848), Anzilla (b. 1849), and Horatio (transcribed Oratio, b. 1852).^[3]
• In 1870, Sally's children Horatio (b. 1858) and Estella (b. 1860) live in the household of Elly Whisple (b. 1830) in Shandaken, Ulster County, New York. There is also a Sally Rose in the household said to be 13 years old (b. 1857). There is one other adult woman in the house, Mary Forbes (b. 1835), as well as three Whisple children, Selbert (b. 1853), Christina (b. 1854), and Andrew (b. 1866).^[4]
