According to FindAGrave.com, here is information about some history of his father Rev. Samuel Newton and his offspring:
Birth: Jan. 1, 1792 Woodbridge New Haven County Connecticut, USA Death: May 23, 1865 San Antonio Bexar County Texas, USA

Rev. Samuel Newton, the 6th Samuel in succession, s. of Samuel Newton, 5th and Lucy Smith, b. Jan. 1, 1792 at Woodbridge, Conn. He d. May 23, 1865 at San Antonio, TX. In 1821, Samuel and first wife Betsey Baldwin and their two children enlisted with the United Foreign Missionary Society of New York as missionaries to the Osage Indians at what would become Harmony Mission at present-day Bates County, MO. Betsey d. May 6, 1821 along the Ohio River following childbirth while the missionaries were in transit from New York to begin Harmony Mission. Betsey was buried at Old Shawneetown, Illinois, her newborn child dying several days beforehand near Louisville, KY. Only the fate of one of their older two children is known. Samuel would later marry two widows of fellow missionaries. His third wife, Sophia Martitia (Palmer)(Joslyn) Newton, survived him by 34 years.

On Jan. 4, 1813 at the Woodbridge, Conn. Congregational Chh., Samuel m. 1) Betsey Baldwin, dau. of Silas Barnabas Baldwin and Mary Smith, b. June 18, 1795 at New Haven, Conn. She d. at Old Shawneetown, IL after giving birth to an infant child, who had died days beforehand. Their children were:

• i. Malvina Ruth Newton, b. Jan. 7, 1815 at Woodbridge, Conn. While she accompanied her parents to Harmony Mission, her subsequent fate is unknown.

• ii. Charles Gordon Newton, b. Sept. 25, 1816 at Woodbridge, Conn., d. Jan. 9, 1872 at Dallas, TX; m. 1) Aug. 13, 1837 at New Haven, Conn. to Mary Hanford Bristol, dau. of Anthony Bristol and Julia Bontecou, b. Nov. 12, 1818 at Milford, Conn. She d. Mar. 5, 1852 at Austin, TX. Seven children of the family. Charles m. 2) Mar. 5, 1853 at Dallas, TX to Adaline Lavinia Keene, who d. in 1892 at Cleburne, TX. There were five children by this second marriage.

• iii. An unnamed child, b. Apr. 29, 1821 on a keel boat on the Ohio River near Louisville, KY; d. shortly thereafter on May 4, 1821 near Mount Vernon, Indiana.

On June 3, 1822 at Harmony Mission, Samuel m. 2) Mary Hunt McCarty, dau. of Francis McCarty and Joanna "Anny" van Devoort, the widow of fellow missionary John Seeley. John Seeley d. at Harmony Mission Nov. 22, 1821. Mary was b. July 19, 1802 at Pompton, Passiac County, NJ and d. Nov. 21, 1835 at the mission station known as "the Forks of the Illinois", later moved and renamed Parkhill Mission. Their children were:

• iv. Col. Samuel Galitzen Newton, b. Mar. 21, 1823 at Harmony Mission, d. June 21, 1874 at San Antonio, TX; m. Feb. 20, 1854 Mary Elizabeth Tompkins, b. Dec. 12, 1830 at New York. She d. Jan. 8, 1878 at San Antonio, TX. Eight children of the family.

• v. Ann(a) Olivia Newton, b. Dec. 4, 1824 at Harmony Mission, d. after June 1880 at Gonzales County, TX; m. John Harvey Johnson and had eight known children.

• vi. Capt. Francis McCarty Newton, b. Mar. 11, 1827 at Harmony Mission, d. Apr. 1, 1902 at San Antonio, TX; m. Apr. 29, 1860 to Clarinda Minerva Sibert, dau. of Joseph R. Sibert and Elizabeth Marye, b. July 10, 1838 at New Market, VA. She d. in Mar. 1926 at San Antonio, TX. Eleven children of the family.

• vii. Mary Dwight Newton, b. Jan. 11, 1829 either at Harmony Mission or at Dwight Mission to the Cherokee Indians in Indian Territory, d. Oct. 29, 1862; m. Winslow John Trowbridge. One known child of the family.

• viii. Sarah Elizabeth Newton. b. in Sept. 1830 at the "Forks of the Illinois" missionary station, later called Parkhill Mission, and d. at that mission station June 13, 1835.

• ix. Lucy Jane Newton, b. Nov. 26, 1832 at the "Forks of the Illinois" mission station, d. June 2, 1892; m. Francis William Sibert, whose sister Clarinda was the wife of Lucy's brother Francis, b. circa 1820 at New Market, VA. Two known children of the family.

• x. Henry Martyn Newton, b. Dec. 22, 1834 at the "Forks of the Illinois" mission station, d. Jan. 31, 1918 at San Antonio, TX; m. June 26, 1867 at San Antonio to Lucinda Elizabeth Smith, dau. of William John Smith and purportedly Maria de Jesus Curbelo (albeit her TX Death Certificate provided by dau. Lucy names Lucinda's mother as Josephine Delgado), b. June 1, 1842 at San Antonio, TX. She d. at San Antonio Jan. 1, 1925. Five children of the family.

On July 27, 1835 at the "Forks of the Illinois" mission station, Samuel m. 3) Sophia Palmer, dau. of John Hampden Palmer and Lydia Loomis, the widow of fellow missionary Matthias Joslyn (q.v. Joscelyn). Matthias d. Nov. 21, 1833 at Union Mission, not at Dwight Mission as typically stated. Sophia was b. Mar. 2, 1811 at Strafford, VT and d. Nov. 4, 1899 at San Antonio, TX. Their children were:

• xi. John Hampden Palmer Newton, b. June 20, 1836 prob. at Park Hill Mission (formerly "Forks at the Illinois" mission station), d. in August 1899 at San Antonio, TX; m. 1) an unknown wife as he is called a widower residing with his widowed mother in the 1880 census; m. 2) Margaret L. Bell after June 1880. She d. in 1926 at San Antonio, TX. There are no known children by either wife.

• xii. Julia Sophia Newton, b. in Apr. 1840 at Cane Hill, Arkansas, d. in 1929 at Alexandria, VA; m. Sept. 3, 1862 at San Antonio, TX to George Bell Cochran, b. in April 1827 at Virginia. He d. in 1902 at Alexandria, VA. Seven known children of the family.
