Biography

Joseph Newton was born in Birtley, County Durham, England, on or before the day of his baptism in Chester-le-Street, County Durham, on the 4th April 1830, the son of William Newton and Margaret Pratt.[1]

On the 6th June 1841, Joseph (11) was living on Forster Street, in the civil parish of Kelloe, Easington Hundred (South Division),County Durham. Home at the time were his father: William (48), a mine labourer; his mother: Margaret (48); and his siblings: William (19); Margaret (16); John (14); Elizabeth (8); Mary (5).[2]

On the 30th March 1851, Joseph (19) was living in New Cassop, County Durham, with his family. The entire family was listed as being employed as colliery labourers, even the girls. Those home at the time were his father: William (58); his mother: Margaret (58); his siblings: William (29); Elizabeth (17); Mary (15); John (24); and County Durham-born visitor: William Hogg (24), a coal miner.[3]

Joseph married Mary Redden in Durham in 1854[4][5] and started a family there before deciding to migrate to Australia in the mid-1800's (pretty much within ten years). Sadly, their eldest, Thomas, passed away within two years of his birth.

Joseph and his wife Mary packed up their surviving child (their eldest, Thomas, had died in infancy) and headed off to the Victorian gold-fields, where the rest of their tribe were born.

Family Members' Migration
At least two of Joseph's bothers also migrated to Australia around that same time; one of whom was married to the sister of Joseph's wife. (This trend continued for the next generation or two, with two brothers of one family marrying two sisters in another. Double-cousins all around!)
As the men-folk of this family were miners — not panners — it is easy to understand why they might succumb to lung disease, or related issues.

Joseph Newton (senior) passed away from bronchitis on the 18th November 1893, in Bendigo, Victoria, Australia, aged 63 years. An obituary published on the 21st November noted the large family, and also mentioned how well-liked and respected he had been in life.[6]
