Biography

Mudgee Guardian and North-Western Representative (NSW : 1890 - 1954) Mon 23 Jul 1906 Page 2 William Nicholls, aged between 55 and 65 years, was last week charged with being insane before the Gulgong Bench. Constable Milling deposed to having arrested Nicholls at his mother's residence at Denison Town. Accused appeared to be weak-minded, and stated that he was afraid he was going to die and was always frightened. He also said he was very wicked and had committed every crime but murder. Accused was remanded to Mudgee for medical observation.

Mudgee Guardian and North-Western Representative (NSW : 1890 - 1954) Thu 21 Nov 1907 Page 13 A Harmless Imbecile. The are many phases of insanity, and William Nicholls, late of Leadville, but now of Parramatta Asylum, whither he has been deported by the Gulgong "powers that be," imagines, in his hallucinations, that he is a mathematician and a surveyor. The poor fellow, who has no evil intentions, is continually en-grossed in marking out imaginary selections on the floor of his cell. Perhaps the various schemes of Closer Settlement have unhinged his mind.

Cumberland Argus and Fruitgrowers Advocate (Parramatta, NSW : 1888 - 1950) Wednesday 13 May 1914, page 2 A Missing Man William Nicholls, a man about 58 years of age and said to be of weak intellect, left Macquarie-street Asylum, Parramatta, on April 10, to go, as it was believed, to his relatives place at Marrickville. He had not turned: up, up to the time of writing. He Is 5ft. 6in. In height, fair, with blue eyes; and he has a habit of put-ting his hand continually to his head. The police would be glad to get word as to his whereabouts., It is feared in some quarters that he has wandered into the bush and has perished.
