Biography

BIOGRAPHY OF RUHAMA NICHOLS BILDERBACK GREEN
Ruhama Nichols was born October 25, 1769 in Jefferson County Virginia. It is unclear whether she meant the present Jefferson County which wasn't formed until 1803 or another area of Virginia. To date we have not been able to locate Ruhama's parents. We do know that sometime during 1785, Ruhama married Charles Bilderback, a man who was 19 years her senior. She probably married him either in Washington County, Pennsylvania where Charles owned property or in Ohio County, Virginia (now West Virginia) where he made his final home. On August 5, 1788 Charles and Ruhamey Bilderback sold property abutting Moses Decker and the widow Van Metre to Ephriam and Lidey (Lydia) Bilderback. Ephriam and Lidey sold this land on May 2, 1791 to Charles and Asa Teale. Charles also sold land on Chartiers Creek, Washington Co., Pennsylvania to his father and mother (Ephriam and Lidey) on December 17, 1785 - since Ruhama's permission was not required, it is assumed that they were not yet married. Charles and Ruhama's son was supposed to be about 2 years old in June of 1789 (at the time of his father's death), therefore, Charles and Ruhama must have been married shortly after he deeded the Chartier's Creek property to his parents.
Many interesting stories about Ruhama have been written - her first husband was killed by Indians, in retribution for his own part in the slaughter of innocent Moravian Indians, and she was held captive for a period of time, from three months up to one year, reports vary. She was kidnapped in June 1789 and ransomed 9 months later which would have been March 1790. Ruhama married John Green February of 1791.
After Ruhama married Mr. John Green, in 1798, they emigrated to the Hockhocking Valley, and settled about three miles west of Lancaster, where she gave birth to the first white male child in Fairfield county, and where she continued to reside until the time of her death.
The Green Family Bible record shows that John and Rhuhama Green had three children born prior to 1798 - the year of their migration from Berkeley County, Virginia to Fairfield County, Ohio; and five children were born following the date of their arrival in Fairfield. Their first child, born after they came to Fairfield was named John Green, Jr., and the date of his birth was March 9, 1799. John Jr. grew to manhood on the farm three miles west of Lancaster and with his two brothers was executor of his father's will.
Ruhama died on September 25, 1842 after a short illness, at her home along Hunter's Run at the base of Beck's Knob. Here she was buried along with her beloved husband John. Although tombstones were purchased, they no longer exist. She lived a good long life, suffered hardships and shared many joys.

Thank you, Rick Pierpoint, for adding the Hanaford family history book as a source. I had a chance to review the google book. Good sketch on Ruhama Bilderback Green that reinforces the other ones I read. It is interesting to note the similarities and differences to get a fuller view.
