Biography

Farmer This family is found on the 1870 Dekalb County, Alabama Census, Book # 836. Mary is listed in Family # 58, with Grezalan, age 69, and John B. Nichols, age 66, both born in South Carolina. Mary is age 19, born in Georgia. There are two other Nichols families next to hers. They are Family # 56, in Book # 836, James, age 35 born GA, Margaret E, age 25, born IN, Charley, age 4, Minnie, age 2, and John, age 1; and Family # 59, in Book # 836, William H.,age 28, born AL, Julia A. R., age 21, born SC, and Joseph, age 0. All three families are listed together in the same book.[1][2]

Here is what I[3]have on John B. Nichols. John B. Nichols b 1804 SC d1870 married Grizzler Burford in Hall Co.,GA on 29 Jan 1828. Their children (not in order):

  1. James Madison Nichols b 1834/7 GA, d 1888 Jackson Co., AL married 1st Margaret E? had Charley Nichols, Minnie Nichols, John Nichols. James Madison Nichols married 2nd Orilla Chisenhall (her father was Delaney Chisenhall).
  2. Wm Henry Nichols b 1842 Ga d 1911 Jackson Co., AL married Julia A.R. Elrod, they had Joseph Nichols b 1860 AL.
  3. Mary Nichols b 1851 (had her married to Henry/Oscar Patty, you corrected that).
  4. Eliza Nichols b 1829.
  5. Elizabeth Jane Nichols b 1833 married Wm Parks Patty ( dad-John Patty & mom-Nancy Ann Drew).
  6. Benjamin Nichols b 1837. This info came from the Heritage Book of Dekalb Co., AL and some of it came from emails (that I've lost) and some of it I gathered from online sources such as genforum and the world connect project at rootsweb.

I know that there are probably some errors in it but at least this gives you a start. Grizzler Burford's father Thomas Burford fought in the Revolutionary war with George Washington at Valley Forge.
