Biography

Joan Reeves was born in 1614. She was married to Richard Leeds on 27 December 1632 at Castor-next-Yarmouth, England.[1] Joan is named the wife of Richard Leeds in his 1645 will.[2]

Joan died on 9 February 1692 in Dorchester, Massachusetts.[3]

Immigration

The following is found in the 1896 NEHGS membership application for Theodore Leeds

"In a partially destroyed parchment volume in the Rolls Office, London, the following appears:
Aprill the /12th/1637 The examination Richard: Leeds: of great ya'mouth. Marrinar. ageed 32 years. and Joane: his wife/ ageed 23 yeares/ with one Child/ are desirous to passe to New England and there to inhabit and dwell///"
"They sailed, in April 1637, in the John and Dorothy and settled in Dorchester, Mass."[4]

Research Notes

The Case of the two Joans

At this point, there is not enough documentation to know if there is one Richard Leeds (1605-1693) in the town of Yarmouth, England who married Joan Reve in 1632 and then married Joan Nichols in 1634. Searching through records in the town of Castor-next-Yarmouth, where Joan Reve married Richard does not show death or burial for her before July 1634.
The other conclusion would be that there were two Richard Leeds, one of which was the Richard Leeds (1605-1693) who immigrated to America in 1637. One Richard married Joan Reve in 1632 and the other married Joan Nichols in 1634.

Joan Reve (Reeve)

  • It appears that a Richard Leeds married a Joan Reve in Castor-next-Yarmouth, England on 27 Dec. 1627, both were of Yarmouth. The marriage record is the only documentation found as evidence that Joan Reve was married to Richard Leeds.[1]
  • There is no record in the town of Castor-next-Yarmouth 1634 marriage records of a Richard Leeds and a Joan Nichols, nor is there a burial record from 1632-1634 burial record for a Joan Leeds, wife of Richard Leeds. It appears that Joan Reve Leeds did not die in the town of Castor-next-Yarmouth and Richard Leeds married Joan Nichols. [5]

Joan Nichols

  • There is a marriage record for a Richard Leeds and Joan Nichols in Yarmouth, Norfolk, England (Greater Yarmouth is also known as Yarmouth) on 1 July 1634. This is the marriage record that was used on FindAGrave to determine the FindAGrave[6] maiden name.[7]
  • There is a baptismal record for John, the son of Richard Leeds, and his wife Joan on 17 May 1635 in Loddon, Norfolk, England. This could be the child the couple had when they emigrated in 1637[8]

Disputed Child

A prior version of this profile, without source, attached Ruth (Leeds) Allen (1652-1680) as an additional child.

Hello Robert Richards,

since Joan and Robert Leeds were married in England and migrated, she is eligible to be in the Puritan Great Migration project. I'll add the project box and PGM will become Co-Manager. We do hope, however, that you will continue to actively manage this profile, Robert. Thank you.

PGM google Crew: there's work that needs to be done here. Her husband is in GMD and listed on p. 206. Thanks.
