DEATH NOTICE [4] ‘’On the 3rd July, 1863, at Clarence Plains, William Melmer Nichols, senior, aged 69 years. The funeral will move from Mr. Medley’s Rokeby, on Tuesday next, at 12 o’clock. Friends will please take this as an invitation, as no circulars will be sent.’’
From the Obituary of his great-grandson, Hubert Allan NICHOLS:
William Melmer Nichols, with his family, came to Tasmania as a free settler with Governor Collins on the vessel Ocean in 1803. William Nichols was appointed superintendent of carpenters, and became the supervisor of the erection of the first buildings on the area which is now Hobart. His son, William Melmer Nichols jun., was the first Postmaster in Hobart.[5]

2. William Helmer Nichols's daughter Elizabeth was born about 1 year after the marriage of William Melmer Nichols to Hannah Kimberley. From Tasmania records (linked on Nichols -3931), Melmer does appear to be the correct spelling of the middle name, also that record is the earlier of the two, so propose to keep that one.
