Biography

Isabel Nichols was born on 4 April 1864, her birth being registered at Kensington, London in the 2nd quarter of that year^[1]. She was the daughter of Francis Morgan Nichols and Mary Buchanan. Her father was a Barrister at law of 157 Westbourne Terrace.

She was baptised on 15 May 1864 at Holy Trinity, Churchover, Warwickshire, England^[2].

In the 1881 England Census Isabel Nichols (aged 16) was recorded in the household of her father Francis M Nichols (54) and her mother Mary Nichols (54) at Lawford Hall, Lawford, Essex, England. Also in the household were her siblings John Bowyer Buchanan Nichols (21), Walter Buchanan Nichols (20) and Irene Nichols (19), as well as household servants Mark Carter (20), Edward C. Wright (16), Jane Harper (38), Annie Harper (24) and Frances Brown (23).

She married Maj.-Gen. Hon. John Edward Lindley (the son of Nathaniel Lindley, Baron Lindley and Sarah Katherine Teale) on 28 September 1887 at the parish church in Lawford, Essex^[3].

They had one daughter: Mary Katherine Lindley (bapt. 1 May 1891, d. 1982)

In the 1891 England Census Isabel Lindley (aged 27) was recorded in the household of her parents Francis M Nichols (64) and Mary Nichols (64) at Shanklin, Isle of Wight, Hampshire. Also in the household was her daughter Mary C Lindley (aged 1 month), her brother Walter Buchanan Nichols (30) and five servants.

In the Ireland Census of 1911 Isabel Lindley (aged 49) was recorded living at Kilbride Cross Roads, County Carlow, Ireland with her husband John Edward Lindley (50), their nephew Francis Wm Lindley Gull (21) and servant Ellen Cummins (36).

Her husband John passed away on 7 April 1925.

In the 1939 England and Wales Register Isabel Lindley (aged 75 and widowed) was recorded living at Gascoigne, Samford, Suffolk, England, along with Edith A May (aged 72, Private Secretary), Joyce W Starling (aged 19, Cook) and Audrey A Dale (aged 24, House Parlourmaid).

Occupation: Private Means

She passed away on 28 November 1956^[4]. Her Will was proved on 21 December 1956 at London to her daughter the honourable Mary Katherine Bruce (the wife of the Honourable Robert Bruce). Effects: £3203 5s. 11d.
