Biography

The following typed copy of his obituary that appeared in the LaGrange Standard on Wednesday July 23, 1890, he died on Monday July 21, 1890.

Nichols Charles G. – The sudden death of Charles G. Nichols of Lima on the (unreadable) On Wednesday afternoon the funeral rites were performed at St. Marks Church, the solemn services being conducted by Rev. C. N. Spalding DD Rector. The attendance of friends from home and various parts of the county was far beyond the capacity of the church and a large concourse of people followed the remains to their last resting place in the vault which he had been superintending the construction of up to the Friday preceding his death. On few occasions has so much unaffected sorrow been displayed by the community. All business places were closed during the services and all united to show tender respect for the departed and his family. Charles G. Nichols was a son of Drusus and Rebecca Nichols, who not long after their marriage in Connecticut, became residents of LaGrange County. Drusus Nichols operated the Mongo mill from 1831 to 1836, at one time owned a commission house at Fort Wayne, and was prominent in the building of the old plank road to that city. His enterprise and business qualifications, as well as the prestige of a successful pioneer family, were inherited by his son, Charles G. who was born September 13, 1835, in Litchfield, County, Conn. Coming to this county in his infancy. He returned to his native state at nine years of age, and was educated there. Coming again to Greenfield Township he engaged in farming until 1880 when he removed to Lima where he remained until his death. In partnership with George Libey he conducted the machine shop and foundry at Lima and was prominent in the organization and successful management of the Lima Manufacturing company. He was also a warm friend, and efficient supporter of the Howe Grammar School. June 21, 1859 he was married to Miss. Ellen Burnell, who survives. – LaGrange Co., Indiana
