Notes for ROBERT SAMUEL NICHOLSON:
Robert and Agnes came to Jewell County Kansas prior to 1874 and homesteaded a quarter section of land. The patent was signed on Oct. 10, 1876, and signed by Ulysses Grant. On Mar. 11, 1885 they sold the farm and began renting, moving arount the county several times. When the land opened up for homesteading in the panhandle of Oklahoma, he left to prepare for the land rush. The night before it was to start, someone stole his team, so he had to go on foot. He did not get one but later, he did stake a claim, near Balko. OK. which was a quarter section. The patent was signed by Theodore Roosevelt on Nov. 11, 1908. While preparing his claim, he sent word for the older boys to come help him work the claim. Agnes said if one goes we all go, so loaded their things in the wagon and went. This was the fall of 1907. Bob worked in a livery stable and did alot of work for the Dalton Gang, usually going to their hideout to do it. The law finally figured this out and wanted him to lead them to the hideout. Bob said no, for if he did, his life wouldn't be worth a plug nickel. After much hasseling Bob said he would take them part way, but the law decided against it, because of endangering Bob's life. They lived in a basement, and never did get the house built over it.
