My Grandfather, Isaac Herman Southard, was born in Syria, Madison County, Va 18 Oct 1881. I knew him but my information came from his daughter, my mother, Sylvia Mae (Southard) Hogg. He lived in Syria till about 1905 when he moved up near the Pittsburgh area and went to work for the Railroad.
So Lydia was his grandmother. I was told she was born in Madison County at Nicholson Hollow. If you find Syria on the map and zoom in you will see Nicholson Hollow about 6 miles NNE of Syria. Supposedly the Nicholsons were very private people.
Dont believe he ever met her because Isaac and Lydia and much of their family moved north to Delaware County, PA during the Civil War which was all around them.
3 of their children Robert, Isaac and Newton enlisted in the 34th Virginia Infantry. Robert and Isaac were captured and Newton was killed in action.
James enlisted in the 7th Virginia and was in only one battle, Picketts Charge at Gettysburg where he was wounded, captured, exchanged and released due to injuries.
Charles, who moved north with his parents, was drafted into the Union army but the war ended before he could see any action.
Both are buried in Mt Zion cemetery. That part which the church had purchased. I have been there twice and it was so overgrown it was hard to search. No Markers found
