DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Mary by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Mary:
Not sure if a duplicate or a confusing overlap in documentation between Nickell-123 and Nickell-174.
I have been trying to nail down that Mary and Polly are in fact Mary "Polly". The only references I can find that prove Mary = Polly Nickell are the Settlers and James Nourse publications below but they contradict the will and marriage records listed below. The Mary “Polly” Nickel referenced below (Nickell-174) married a Dr. Cravens and moved to Indiana and did not have a child named Isaac. If she proves to be a unique individual it looks like they had the wrong John Nickell as the dad causing seperate confustion.
John Harrison did cite Maria Lyle's work so its possible a crossed reference has been perpetuated. There were also a lot of John Nickells and Mary Nickells and they could be two seperate people.
Isaac Nickell’s Will (1751-1839) - Names Polly.
Lists “Isaac Nickell son of my daughter Polly Nickell”.
A History of Monroe County - Names Polly as married to John.

(1415) JOSEPH CRAVENS, (1769-1842), the son of John Cravens, (141), and wife Margaret, married November 30, 1790, Mary Nickle, the daughter of John Nickle, of Augusta County. (See page 345.) The officiating clergyman was Rev. Benjamin Irvin, the pastor of the Cooks Creek Presbyterian Church. (See page 321-Rev. Erwin's name appears spelled various ways.) John Nickel, Sr., (Nickle, Nichol), the grand-father of Mary Nickle, (Polly as she was called), in will, 24th March, 1755, names wife Barbara, eldest son John, sons Joseph and Thomas, and daughter Elizabeth. Executors, wife and her brother, and ... McComb. Witness, Alexander Blair, and James Reaburn. Will proved August 17, 1774. Barbara Nickel and Andw McComb, qualified executors. Joseph Cravens, born at Harrisonburg, Virginia, was a prominent physician there for about fifty years; his wife was Mary Nichol (born 1765), of Augusta county, Virginia. (Page 89)
Nickell-1183 and Nickell-123 appear to represent the same person because: same parents and husband. Dates need review as the 1776 date is listed as an alternate on Nickell-123. Merges being proposed for other duplicate family members.
I believe Nickell-81 needs to be split from this spouse. Clearly there are two men of same name and similar data listed but the one is always conflated with the other and only the parents for Nickell-108 match the John who married cousin Mary "Polly" Nickell...thoughts?
I put it in both pages because this entire branch of my family (and maybe yours) has been duplicated and triplicated and an entire generation skipped further down - I don't know how that is handled yet but I haven't had as many polite responses like yours was- Thanks again for responding!
Just checking in as I proposed a merge about 25 days ago with this explanation:
Nickell-460 and Nickell-123 appear to represent the same person because: These profiles have the same name, same exact mother and siblings connected, same birthplace, death date, death place etc...
I wanted to post a reminder bc along w/ my 5th great grandmother (here) my 5th great grandfather, her husband, also has duplicate profiles merging as do some children and a grandparent (waiting on confirmation for that one as well). If any information is needed please respond w/where to send. Thank you, Becky.
