Although he was called Kels, Jr, his full name was Kels Patrick Nickell. His middle name was chosen by his mother to honor her father, Patrick Mahoney.
Kels was born in Camp Carlin, Laramie County, Wyoming. He worked for Union Pacific Railroad as a fireman and later became an engineer. He served in World War I as an engineer assigned to the 62nd Engineer Company.
The Wyoming State Tribune noted in Oct 1918 that both Kels and his brother, Fred, were serving "somewhere in France." After the war, Kels returned to Encampment, was again employed by the Union Pacific.
On March 22, 1922, in Encampment, Wyoming, Kels married Ida Susan Pantle. Kels and Susan had two children both born in Encampment, one of which was Henry Kels Nickell (1925 - 1943)
Kells lived in Encampment until he was admitted to the Veterans Hospital in Cheyenne, Laramie County, Wyoming, where he died in 1966.
He is buried in the Mountain View Cemetery in Riverside, Carbon County, Wyoming, USA
