Biography

Ferdinand Earl Nickerson was born on the 19th of May 1876, to two very proud parents William Padman Nickerson and Sophia (Whitman) Nickerson. Ferdinand was born in the town of Jordan River, Phelburne County, Nova Scotia, Canada [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6]

1881 "Canada Census, 1881" Ferdinand was approximately four years old in this census his parents were William Nickerson, and Sophia Nickerson. * [7]

1891 "Canada Census, 1891" on this census Ferdinand is about fifteen years old, single and born in Nova Scotia. His family resides in Jordan Falls, Shelburne, Nova Scotia. * [8]

1896 "Marriage" Ferdinand Earl Nickerson and Oramina Anna Mc Innis were married on 18 Jul 1876, in Lawrence, Massachusetts. Ferdinand was twenty-one years old and his parents were William Padman Nickerson and Sophia Whitman Nickerson. Oramina Anna McInnis was twenty years old and her parents were Matthias McInnis and Sophia Lantz McInnis * [9]

1898 Ferdinand and Ora, which is short for Oramina, had a son born on Jun 16 1898, in Lowell Massachusetts. They named this first child Ansel Earl Nickerson, which has been mistakenly written as Onset. * [10]

1900 On May 7, 1900 Ferdinand and Ora had their second child this time a girl, which they named Nina Sophia Nickerson. I would imagine that Nina's middle name was in honor of Ferdinand's mother Sophia. Nina was born in Brockton, Massachusetts. * [12]

'1900 "United States Census, 1900" Ferdinand was approximately twenty-four, he was born in Canada, married and his occupation was a Painter. The family's residence was 5 Hall Street, Brockton Plymouth, Massachusetts. He immigrated to the U.S. from Canada in the year 1890. The family rents a home. * [13]

1903 Ferdinand was twenty-seven when he filed a petition with the Judge of the Circuit Court of the United States for the District of Massachusetts. The form stated that Ferdinand E. Nickerson of Brookline in said District, by occupation Dairyman an alien and a free white person, that he was born in Jordan River, Phelburne County, Nova Scotia the 19th day of May in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and seventy-six and is now about twenty-seven years of age; that he arrived at Boston in the District of Massachusetts in the United States of America, on or about the twenty-sixth day of February in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and ninety-four; that it then was and still is, his bona fide intention to become a citizen of the United States of America, and to renounce forever all allegiance, more especially to Victoria Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, whose subject he has heretofore been. He therefore prays that this, his Declaration and Intention, may become a record of this Honorable Court, Agreeably to the laws in such case made and provided. Circuit Court of the United States, Massachusetts District. Then the above named petitioner personally appeared before the Clerk of said Court and made oath to the truth of the facts as set forth in the above declaration to the Court by him subscribed. * [14]

1910 "United States Census, 1910" Ferdinand is approximately thirty-three years of age, still married, both of his parents were born in Canada, His two children ages nine and eleven. * [15]

1910 William Padman Nickerson, Ferdinand's father, passed away on February 19, 1910, in Watertown, Massachusetts. According to William's Death Certificate, the place of Burial is Tewksbury Cemetery. * [16]

1918 Ferdinand was forty-two when the requirements to complete a World War I Draft Registration Cards, were made. On 12 Sep 1918, Ferdinand completed his cards. At the time he was living at 59 Maynard Street, Malden, Middlesex, Massachusetts, Birthdate May 19th 1876. He wrote his employer's name was Gro W. Nickerson, Painter, Employers Address: 26 Thomly Boston, Mass. Nearest Relative: Ora M. Nickerson 59 Maynard, Malden, Mass. Med height, med build, Blue Eyes, Light colored Hair [17]

1920 "1920 United States Federal Census" Ferdinand is approximately forty-four years old, and resides on 59 Maynard Street, Malden, Middlesex, Massachusetts, His occupation is still a painter, though now he is specialized his trade to the House Industry. He owns his own home though it is mortgaged. He has submitted his paper for Naturalization and is waiting to become a U.S. Citizen. He and his wife are about the same age. Nina is about nineteen and Ansel is twenty-two, with both of them still living at home. * [18]

1924 "U.S. City Directories Malden, Massachusetts, 1924, this directory reflects that the family continues to live at 59 Maynard, and Ferdinand is still a painter. * [19]

1930 "United States Census, 1930" Ferdinand and Ora are both approximately fifty-three years old. The couple's residence is in Malden, however, the census does not list the street address. Both children have moved out from the family home. * [20]

1940 "United States Census, 1940" Ferdinand and Ora are both approximately sixty-three years of age. Their daughter Nina, who had been married obtained a divorce and moved back home. Her parents would not allow her to bring her son with her so she boarded him out, while she attended Nursing School. * [21]

1943 Ferdinand Earl Nickerson passed away 20 Jan 1943 in Malden, Middlesex, Massachusetts. [22]

Parts I through IV, resulted from the dedicated work of Pauline Derick. She tapped into resources created by Anna Kingsbury and others, spearheaded by NFA founder William Emery Nickerson. She was also ably assisted by many, many Nickerson relations. Pauline’s son Burt carried this work forward after her death in 1997.
