In 1861 at Malahide Township, Elgin, Ontario ( ), is Nathaniel Nickerson, a widower, age 76, farmer, born in New Brunswick. There is a Mary Nickerson, age 26, married to an Alexander Nickerson, age 25. They are living with Nathaniel Nickerson, on the family estate, with their children, Alice, 4 and Alma, 1. Mary and the children are New Connexion Methodists.

In the 1870 census for Lapeer County, Goodland Township, Michigan (p. 15), Nathaniel Nickerson is age 85, a "Retired Farmer" born at New Brunswick, living with his son Alex Nickerson, 33 and his wife, Mary J., 33. Alex is a Farmer born in Canada. They have children, Alice, 12, Alma 9, Homer, 8, all born in Canada and Everett, 5, Ellena, 2. both born in Michigan which would indicate that they probably immigrated to the US between 1862 and 1865. They are living next to the family of Henry Watson from Canada and William Hickey from Canada. Not far away (p. 16) is the family of Issac Shotwell, 35, a farmer from Canada and his wife Mary, 35. She is the daughter of Nathaniel Nickerson. With them are their children, George, 14, Alfred, 13, Mortimer, 11, Charlotte, 8, all born in Canada, and Agnes, 4, and Ralph, 5/12, born in Michigan, and a Matilda Shotwell, 74, born in New Jersey who may be Isaac's mother.
